Ride with Richter
Ten months ago, the Knox community received the news that now Year 12 student Alex Richter had an accident on his mountain bike, resulting in a spinal injury. After 10 months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation, he was discharged and given the all-clear to return to school. The Stage 6 Team worked with Alex and his family to put a gradual return to school plan into place, which included doing the HSC over a few years. These intentions were short lived as Alex decided he wanted to be back at school full time and complete his HSC this year! Despite having missed three terms of class work, Alex is currently completing his Trial HSC exams in all subjects and is on track to meet all NESA requirements to be eligible to complete his HSC with the Class of 2020. Wow!

I am proud to commend to you a fundraising initiative that kicks off this Saturday. Register now at the Ride With Richter website which is a challenge to either ride, run, row or walk from 29 August to 20 September (Tour de France dates). The idea is to commit to a goal within one of these activities. I have heard of some lofty targets within the Stage 6 team as they endeavour to ‘Ride With Richter’. Me, I will be aiming to walk and row as part of the challenge. I encourage the entire Knox community to register for this event either as an individual or as a family.

Each year, NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) conducts a writing competition for students across NSW called WriteOn. A stimulus is provided and students use this to construct a text of their choice. Each school is invited to submit just one entry from each stage within the school. To say we were delighted to receive news of the results recently is something of an understatement. Of the three entries submitted, our boys were awarded a Gold, a Silver and a Bronze Award. For a school to have on awardee is outstanding, but for each of our entries to be awarded a prize, is truly exceptional!

Congratulations to Jeremy Owen in Year 5 (GOLD for Stage 3), Marcus Lin in Year 4 (Bronze for Stage 2), and Dean Malouf in Year 2 (Silver for Stage 1). For Jeremy to earn a Gold award as a Year 5 student, competing against the best Year 6 writers in the state is outstanding! We are so excited for the boys and I am sure you will want to read their stories in the Year 2, 4 and 5 sections of this edition.

Celebrate the varied splendour in this world, and remind yourself that it can also be found in you. Dr Salma Farook

Providing opportunities for your son to flourish, in his own way, is essential for his wellbeing.

There is plenty of competition for your son in this world and for the life ahead of him. Parents do not need to micromanage each hour of their son’s afternoon to make them successful when they are 18 years old.  Boys need to participate in open activities with other children and laugh together as they experience fun. When boys play they learn the essential skills of compromise, collaboration and communication.

Celebrate what he can do, not what he can’t.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

Kindergarten has eagerly begun tuning into our new Knoxigations unit. The big idea we are exploring is: 'Forces impact the world around us'. In this unit, we will be learning about push and pull forces, gravity and friction, and how these forces are applied to our daily lives.

We read the story, 'The Enormous Turnip' (a Russian folktale) to introduce the concept of forces. In this story, the farmer plants a turnip seed and watches it grow. When it has grown, he tries to pull the turnip out, but he cannot pull it out. So, he has to find a solution to his problem.

Year 1 News

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

Last week Year 1 celebrated ‘Science Week’. This was a perfect lead into our new Knoxigations Inquiry ‘Foods from Farms to Factories’.  As part of our day, the boys were challenged to explore the Earth’s oceans and investigate what types of food our oceans can provide us with. As part of this investigation the boys learnt about oceans farms, in particular fish and seaweed farms. The boys used online videos and Google Expeditions to explore a variety of ocean farms before they had the task to design and make their own ocean farms. Another activity was looking at the different types of ocean pollution, in particular oil pollution, and how it affects the food we get from our oceans. We conducted experiments to investigate the effects of oil mixed with water. Following this we also explored how this type of pollution affects ocean animals and food sources. A great day of fun and learning was had by all!

Year 2 News

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

Fabulous reading, Year 2! All boys completed the Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) this week successfully reading over thirty books to continue their love of reading! Reading is fundamental to a child’s education and the PRC aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. We would like to thank all Year 2 parents for their enthusiasm in reading aloud with your son on a regular basis and for continuing to complete the Term 3 Reading Log each evening.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

Throughout Semester Two teachers will be placing extra emphasis on promoting important life skills related to independence, organisation and time management. This could be reinforced through the individual completion of set tasks, through ensuring that students arrive promptly to scheduled lessons or by simply making sure that required equipment such as diaries have been brought to School.

In light of this the Year 3 teachers also ask for your help and support in reinforcing these key messages at home. Throughout the week all students are encouraged to remember to pack their own bag, remind a parent or guardian to sign their diary and homework sheet and to ensure that they have brought any necessary extra belongings to School such as sport bags or musical equipment when required. Building these valuable life skills will assist students in preparing to face growing challenges throughout their school years as they continue to develop and respond to increasing demands.

Year 4 News

Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader

GeoGuessr
During Science Week last week, the boys were introduced to GeoGuessr. The program provides a Google Street View of somewhere in the world and the task is to identify, using investigative skills, where in the world it could be and to ‘pin’ that location on a map. The boys use features such as weather, landscape, signage and roads to help them. Points are awarded based on how close you get to the location. The competition quickly became fierce as classrooms erupted with cheers of guesses within 3km, but it was when it got down to guesses within 3 metres that things really heated up. The boys became increasingly critical of the image and began looking for the most minute details.

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

The boys in Year 5 embarked on our new unit under the Global Changemakers domain. Our big idea is: 'Lessons learned in the past help us to lead a better future.' We can look at events in History from multiple perspectives and learn from those events so that history is not repeated. Our unit begins with an explicit inquiry into The Stolen Generation through the novel ‘The Burnt Stick’. The boys will then move into their own inquiry of an event in history from a number of perspectives. The unit concludes with us looking into leadership: what makes an effective leader, and significant leaders in our society that have shaped the future. The timing is quite purposeful as the boys begin the process of making decisions about our Prep student leaders for 2021.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

What a day it was! The sun was shining and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the boys commenced the inaugural Year 6 Colour Run. The boys pranced their way through obstacles, did a Tik Tok dance, crawled through a camo net, jumped over hay bales and dodged their way through old tyres all of this whilst getting plastered with all the colours of the rainbow. With so many events unable to be completed this year, it was wonderful to see the boys with such big smiles on their faces. On behalf of the Year 6 staff and students, I would like to thank all the parents involved with the set up on Sunday and the staff who made themselves available to help out on the day. We couldn’t have done it without you! We look forward to sharing all the wonderful images with you from the day.

Mr Martin Haywood

Last Saturday was our final winter experience for both Prep and Senior School students. I hope the boys enjoyed a fun, relaxed end to quite an unusual season indeed. One I hope we don’t have to experience ever again. The boys have all showed incredible resilience right from the days of training from home, to training on Knox 1 in a grid/confined space to playing modified games on a Saturday (such as non-contested scrums). All boys showed immense maturity and patience and a willingness to accept the changes and push ahead and trust our coaches. Some results were just beyond our expectations and all boys and staff are to be congratulated.

Congratulations to Thomas Mountstephens (Year 12) and James Jiang (Year 11) who have been selected for the CAS Volleyball merit team for 2020.

So what will the summer bring? I do know that despite the Track & Field CAS season being cancelled we are absolutely committed to our Athletics team and another example of a modified season. Much progress has been made by many athletes and it would be good to realise the benefit of this hard work and so this Saturday all boys are encouraged to come along to Gillespie Fields and enjoy some racing and games. Through the shortened season we will invite schools along for some competition (whilst following Covid guidelines). We are also about to announce details of the inaugural 'Headmasters Gift' and lock in a staff v student relay on Knox 1 that will form part of a special week of Track & Field later this term. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to email Mr Fowler or check the weekly newsletters for more information.
