YEAR 7 WEEK 5 TERM 3 2020

Year 7 Week 5 Term 3 2020

We are approaching the middle of the term, and this means the boys will be reaching their peak assessment period. I encourage each boy to check he is on top of his weekly schedule; ensuring he is managing his time well and making sufficient time to eat, study, exercise, socialise and rest appropriately. Each boy has an experienced, caring and ready-to-help Mentor, so please feel free to reach out to your son’s Mentor if there is anything we can do to support your son in getting the balance right in the afore-mentioned areas. Boys are also encouraged to take up the offer of afternoon help at the JAPAC lounge and to speak to their classroom teachers if they require further assistance.

This week in Year Meeting, we asked the boys to reflect on their progress at the Senior School. We viewed a video together where a US NAVY Seal expressed the importance of getting the 'smalls' right before taking on the day, starting with making your bed in the morning. While this may seem insignificant to the boys, it is important to emphasise that the smalls are what help us ensure the day runs smoothly. Without setting yourself up right, you will find that you are constantly chasing your tail. Making your bed, packing your school bag, being on time for the school bus, arriving on campus wearing the correct uniform and bringing the required classroom materials to academic lessons are all ways in which the boys can set themselves up for the day. At Knox, we often discuss the significance of positive reinforcement from staff to boys, and getting the 'smalls' right is a great way for the boys to receive this positive feedback.

Lastly, a reminder that boys should not be on-site prior to 7.45am and that the locker areas will remain closed until then. Once arriving on campus, the boys should proceed straight to the Boarders' Walk for their temperature checks before heading into the locker area.

We have now reached the halfway mark of Term 3, and my lost property container is more than half-full. I seem to have recently accumulated a lot of exercise books, pencil cases and sports jackets. If your son is missing any items, please encourage him to come and see me to look through the lost property.

I would like to clarify the mobile phone policy at the School as there seems to have been a rise in the number of phones being confiscated throughout the day. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the Years 7-10 boys are allowed their phones in their pockets during the day with the COVIDSafe app, however, there is to be no use of the phones in class or around the campus. The students can check their phones in the locker space at recess and lunch for anything urgent or pressing.

Clarification has come from the Deputy Headmaster K-12 Students, regarding COVID-19 testing and medical certificates. Students with cold and flu-like symptoms must have a COVID-19 test, with a screenshot of the negative COVID-19 results being sent to myself, the SAO. If your son is absent for three or more days, a medical certificate is still required, in line with the School policy for medical absences.

School shoes for the Philippines

Later in the term, we will be seeking donations of school shoes. These shoes are life-changing to many poor children and importantly, allow many to attend school. More information to follow.

The Charity Food Drive continues this week and until the end of Week 7. We are inviting Knox families to donate long-life milk, cereal, coffee, tea, cans of meat, vegetables, fruit and/or soup, cup of soup and dried fruit. No glass items, please.

Uniform Shop during COVID-19

In line with the current NSW Health guidelines and in order to mitigate the risks posed by COVID-19, the Uniform Shop staff have taken measures to ensure the safety of students, parents and other staff. External cleaners professionally clean all high-touch areas and surfaces every evening with a non-toxic, hospital grade disinfectant. During the day our staff spray down the changing rooms and service areas. Each room is equipped with hand sanitiser and wall-mounted hand sanitiser stations are at the entry.

Each room is limited to the number of people permitted and that is stated on the entrance to each room. Because of this, we have limited capacity in the changing rooms of only two rooms being operational and only one parent per child who is trying on uniform. As Term 4 is the changeover to summer uniform, can we please request that you take this into consideration. For the remainder of Term 3, we will also be sizing uniforms for Year 8 Cadets.

The options for purchasing uniform are as follows:

• Where possible, if you know the correct sizes to order, please order online through Flexischools.
• If you do require sizing, please make a note before coming what sizes your son is currently wearing.
• In Years 7-12, your son can come to the Uniform Shop at lunchtime. We can provide the sizes required and order online via Flexischools.

To avoid long waiting times towards the end of term, we would advise checking your son’s summer uniform now and, if you require new uniform, please order early. Orders are delivered to Knox Prep and Wahroonga Prep on Wednesday and Friday. Students in the Senior School are permitted to collect orders at lunchtime or after school. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

Uniform Shop opening times: Monday through to Friday, 12.30-5pm.
