YEAR 12 WEEK 5 TERM 3 2020

Year 12 Week 5 Term 3 2020

Hero Image

Despite the news of more cancellations this week, the Year 12 boys, once again, have shown incredible resilience and have just got on with things. We honestly have not heard any negativity from them - they have been incredible. We had almost 100% of boys sit their first HSC Trial Examination on Wednesday, including our boys overseas and the inspirational Alex Richter. As parents though, it must be so heartbreaking to feel that you are missing out on the final Year 12 events: walking through showcases of work, enjoying the final Track and Field Carnival, attending final assemblies and dinners, taking photos of final days. However, I want to assure you that we are doing everything we can to capture these events for you and share the celebrations of this wonderful 2020 cohort. We are hopeful that the function planned for 17 November will go ahead once the HSC is finished. If government restrictions are lifted, we will have the opportunity to all come together then and what a celebration that will be!

Congratulations to the boys who sat their first HSC Language examinations on the weekend. This week more boys are commencing their HSC with English Extension 2 submissions due today, French Oral exams tomorrow and Drama performances next week. We wish all the boys involved in these all the best.

Tonight marks the final debate for our orators as they compete against Trinity Grammar. Knox is in the running to win yet another CAS title and we wish our debating teams well and hope the Year 12 boys enjoy their final competition. Go the Black and Blue!

Last Saturday saw not only the final round of winter sport but the final ever season of competing for the Black and Blue! There were some wonderful games played on the weekend and we must congratulate the 1st X1 Football for winning the CAS premiership for the first time since 2016! Although spectators were not allowed at the Rugby, a number of our boys lined up outside the gates, stayed until the end and cheered on their team through the iron bars. That scene exemplified the cohort of 2020: mateship, resilience, persistence and determination.

The boys have settled well into the Trials this week and seem to be all over their study. It is lovely to be able to see them each morning and wish them all the best for their day.

Congratulations to our Knox 1st XI winning the CAS Football Premiership. This extremely talented group of boys went through the season undefeated and finished with a 2-1 victory at Barker College on Saturday. Knox last won the CAS competition in 2016. I would also like to congratulate the following boys selected in CAS merit teams on the weekend: Rugby – James Constable, AFL – Kale Gabila, Football – Harry Eland, Massimo Forlico, Jonathan Cole, Jordan Segreto.

Many universities are starting to announce changes to their university admission requirements. These announcements are posted on the Careers Hub via the Knox portal. It is important that students keep checking the Careers Hub for updates and are well informed about university admission.

For those yet to register to the Careers Hub, this link will direct you to the site. Please use KNOX20 as the school code.

Once students have registered, they will have full access to the Knox Careers Hub with all newsletters, guides, and career information available. Important messages for specific year groups is available through the message board, including the links to the Zoom career presentations and Virtual Careers Expo.

Business Industry Careers Evening

Students from Years 10 to 12 and their parents were invited to attend the first online Knox Careers event held on 10 August. Focusing on the business industry, our guest presenters were three Knox Old Boys who spoke about their career journeys. In a one-hour Zoom session, Rob Kellaway (OKG87), Lex Pedersen (OKG94) and Mat Hildebrand (OKG18) shared stories and practical tips with students who are contemplating a degree or career in business.

Rob, a Chartered Accountant and Principal of a boutique professional services firm, Kellaway Cridland, opened the session with a 15-minute overview of his experience; first at KPMG, then running a retail business in Westfield before setting up his own firm as a trusted accountant and advisor to the leaders and owners of a wide range of businesses.

Lex, an entrepreneur currently managing four of his own businesses including PeriscoPe Digital and Chrome Temple, is the well-known founder of SurfStitch. Combining 'passion' with career was the common theme of his presentation.

To close out the session, Mat, a second-year student studying the Accounting Co-op Course at Macquarie University, gave a brief outline of the course he is studying and shared some practical tips on what students can do now to lay solid foundations for their future careers, including making the most of the extra-curricular activities available at Knox.

All three presenters agreed on the importance of building and maintaining relationships, by taking a genuine interest in other people and keeping in contact with and nurturing networks.

A hugely successful night, one where students and parents heard some great insights, inspiration, and advice. Thank you to our Old Boys who generously gave their time to share their knowledge and personal insights into their industry.
