In a world that increasingly asks us to move faster, the idea that what you actually need to do every now and then is stop seems counterproductive.

Constantly on our smartphones, checking emails, replying to messages, checking social media, we find ourselves good at being preoccupied. We live in a society that is so fast-paced and in a culture where our “work” follows us constantly as we can access emails and messages 24/7 on our hand-held devices. As a result we find ourselves in a state of “continuous partial attention” – rarely stopping, never fully present. For many of us, it is so easy to lose the art of being aware of what is around us as we are constantly lost in what is ahead of us.

This fast-paced world and its ever-changing technology also raises the concern that our youth are growing up with too many conveniences and instant gratification.

Our students today are navigating life and relationships in a world primarily composed of red and green - stop and go - with no time for yellow, the “pause”. In a fast-paced society that expects immediate feedback and gratification, the challenge for our young people to “pause” and think before acting becomes understandably difficult.

KPA Name Badges
The KPA organises name badges for parents at the start of each school year for use at the various school functions you will attend throughout your son's time at Knox. They come with the Knox crest and your name, with a simple magnet on the back for attaching. They are a much better alternative to the sticky labels that always peel off! The cost of $16 includes postage.

Orders close Friday 19 February 2021. This is the only opportunity to order name badges for 2021, so please put your order in now to avoid disappointment.

Please click here to order and pay for a name badge. Be sure to put down your name as you would like it to appear on the badge (first and last name only).

Knox Uniform Shop

Winter Uniform
We would like to remind all parents that Term 2 changes over into winter uniform. For further information on what the uniform item changes are, please refer to the Uniform Policy and Regulations. We strongly recommend purchasing the winter uniform earlier than later and not wait until the last week of the school holidays as we cannot guarantee all sizes will be available.

Special orders
For any students who have special requirements regarding winter uniform items, it is strongly recommended that these are discussed with the Uniform Shop Staff as soon as possible. Occasionally, we have students who have allergies/sensitivity to wool and in these instances, time permitting, we can get winter trousers lined and jumpers made in a cotton/nylon blend. These special orders require some notice: four weeks for the trousers and up to eight weeks for knitwear.

Other instances include if your son is not of a standard size. For example, very tall but slim and may require extra length or he may be of a more solid frame like a Rugby player and the standard sizes may be disproportional.

Please visit the Uniform Shop during trading hours (see below) or contact via us by phone 9487 0191 or email.

Trading Hours
Monday to Friday: 12.30pm-5.30pm
Saturday (Terms 1 and 4 only): 9am-12noon

And we are up and away for 2021!
So much organisation goes into the beginning of each new academic year, but it is not until the boys are back and all activities are up and running that our purpose develops clarity. All that we do at Prep has the boys and their needs at the centre, and the beginning of this year has been no exception.

Parent Information Evenings
I am holding my breath as I type this, as after 21 days of no community transmission, a positive case from quarantine entering the community may mean that the guidelines for schools might change between now and next week when our Information Evenings are scheduled. Our plan, at this time, is to run these evenings face to face. The current guidelines allow us to bring parents onsite after hours for information evenings, for up to one hour.

To enable this to happen safely, we ask that just one parent per family attends. On entry, you will scan in via the QR code and will move directly to your son’s classroom. We will prerecord the welcome from members of the School leadership team, before the teacher will speak with you and engage you in an activity that helps you to understand the process of learning that our boys engage in each day. Learning at Prep is not static, and we are keen for you to experience this too!

It is no longer necessary to enrol your son at OSH to be supervised until the late bus departs.

Individual student school photos will be taken on Monday 15 February 2021. Students are required to wear their full summer school uniform including blazers (no jumpers). Those students who wear their PDHPE uniform will be required to wear their school uniform. Students attending after school sports training sessions will be required to pack their applicable sports uniform to change into.

What a week! Our first full week with our new Kindergarten boys, Year 1 and Year 2 altogether. The boys have done a marvellous job getting back into the routine of school, making new friendships and developing a relationship with their new teachers.

Thank you for making the time last week to meet with your son’s class teacher over Zoom. This was an excellent opportunity to share relevant information with your son’s classroom teacher and begin to develop some goals for the term ahead, both academically and socially. One very important part of school life here at Knox is to ensure that your son has a balanced focus on Total Fitness (academic, social, spiritual, creative and physical health). The Knox Totalfitness Wheel can be found in your son’s diary. Each Friday, the boys will be asked to reflect on their week, considering the activities they committed time towards. Staff will encourage the boys to try to find ways of balancing all areas of the Total Fitness Wheel.

It was a wonderful week in Kindergarten! The boys came into school with bright smiling faces and asked many questions about the days to come.

Knoxigations

We have just begun our first Knoxigations Unit, with the Big Idea, ‘Families are the same and different’. Last week, the boys explored how they are the same and different. Boys are asked to bring in five items or photographs in a small box. The boys will share these with the class and compare their families and lives. If your son wishes to bring in something expensive, please take a photo of it, rather than sending it in.

It has been wonderful to spend a full week of school with the new Year 2 students last week. The boys are challenging themselves to become leaders of K-2 and to set the standard for the new Kindergarten students and Year 1 boys. The Year 2 teachers would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for making time to meet with us over Zoom last week. It was an excellent opportunity to begin the parent-teacher relationship which is a vitally important part of your son’s learning journey. Questioning & Curiosity
Asking questions is important. It demonstrates curiosity, it can be a display of courage and it can certainly help clarify our understanding. Our Year 5 classrooms are places of wondering. A classroom of the 20th Century may have viewed the teacher at the centre of the classroom with all the answers, but that century is more than 20 years behind us and so is that more limited access to information. Information is now at the boys’ fingertips and it’s also all around them.

We need to teach our boys to be discerning in their search for information and we also need them to think critically and creatively. As such, we have been framing our questions (wonderings) during Knoxigations into three levels:

Year 6 News

It has been a fantastic start to the year for Year 6 as last week they settled into their classrooms and routines. It has been a week of getting to know the boys as the teachers establish routines and classroom expectations. I would like to commend the boys on the way they have come back from holidays, with a great eagerness to learn and excitement about the new activities and experiences they will be having throughout the year. It is going to be a very busy year for the boys and they have started their time in Year 6 in an outstanding fashion.

Sports News

Term 1 sport has started with a flurry. Sport trials and swimming trials have dominated the sporting calendar. Thank you all for having your boys prepared and eager to participate at these events. A few reminders are below which have been generated by some frequently asked question by parents.

Where do I pick up my son after training? – At this stage parent are unable to access the school grounds during the week and therefore clear communication of pick up should be made between yourself and your son. All parents should pick up from Billyard gates. Pick up should be at 4.40pm. Students are not to leave the school grounds until they can visibly see you at the gate.

Can my son wait around for the School Bus after his training? – Once training concludes, boys who are catching the late bus (at 5:15pm) must go directly to the Amphitheatre area to be supervised by a KSAA coach. The coach will escort the boys to the buses when they arrive and make sure they get onto the correct bus. Remind your son to tap on and off the bus with his bus pass. Please note, it is no longer necessary to enrol your son at OSH to be supervised until the late bus departs.

Who do I send an email to about my son’s absences for sport? – You should send your absentee information to Mr. Mark Hitchiner Prep Sport Coordinator and to your son’s sport MIC (Master in Charge). Please view the list below:

-          Cricket – Mr. Bailey Bourn

-          Basketball – Mr Jon Horler

-          Tennis – Mr Lachlan Higgs

2020 STEM Success - State Winning Projects at the Preparatory School
The Knox Prep E-STEAM approach to inquiry learning continues to provide a focus for students to demonstrate agency in developing solutions they see a need for in the world. This year, ten teams from the Preparatory School showcased their robotic, coding, and app concept projects at the NSW State Young ICT Explorers and STANSW Young Scientist Awards.

The feedback provided by the judges was phenomenal and to have this number of winning entries at a state level was an incredible achievement from all the students and staff involved.

Ride with Richter Day

Knox Prep and Wahroonga Prep ‘Ride with Richter Day’ – Friday 5 March

As a Knox community, we have all shared Alex Richter’s (Class of 2020) journey since his accident in October of 2019 which resulted in a significant spinal injury. More on Alex’s story here.

Part of this journey has been Alex completing the HSC with his cohort at the end of last year. This was an incredible achievement considering he had only been in class for 5 weeks since starting Year 12.

As an extended school community, we would like to continue to help Alex and his family purchase equipment that will be vital to his continued rehabilitation. To that end, on Friday 5 March, we will have Ride With Richter Day at both Knox Prep and Wahroonga Prep, the same as we did at the Senior School in Term 4 of last year. Parents will be able to purchase ‘Ride With Richter’ caps which the boys and girls can then wear to school on the day. There will also be other fundraising initiatives including wristbands and fun activities (gold coin donations).

To facilitate the ordering of caps, if you would like your son or daughter to wear one can you please click on the following link, and follow the steps outlined below, before Monday 22 February. Caps cost $25 and you can pay by credit card.

We encourage all boys and girls to get actively involved so we can continue to help Alex realise his dreams.

1)    Go to the Knox Payment Portal, www.knox.nsw.edu.au/payment

2)    Select ‘Other School Activities’ and click Next

3)    Select ‘Ride With Richter – Prep’ or ‘Ride With Richter – WPS’ from the Event Name dropdown menu

4)    Complete the payment details and include your son/daughter’s full name in the ‘Participant’s Name’ box and their Class Name in the ‘Other Details’ box
