Mr Scott James

In this modern age, diversity and socio-cultural awareness have become more important than they ever were before. In fact, Australians consider our rich cultural diversity as one of our main strengths which embodies our national identity.

For these reasons, we must continue to develop our understanding of the strength diversity brings to communities, and how discrimination, prejudice, stereotypes, judgement and intolerance of diversity actually make us weaker.

Families belonging to our school community contribute to our diversity and this is what makes us stronger because there is so much we can learn from each other. Whether it's our city families, rural families, or international families….our rich diversity is our collective strength.

A shared message to students is the importance of recognising we all have different strengths and weaknesses, and this fact does not decrease our value as individuals. In fact, every young person brings their own unique set of strengths and challenges, and this is to be embraced and appreciated rather than judged and feared.

Mrs Sue Floro

I know that no one will believe me when I tell you that I have a new favourite time of the day, and that is afternoon pickup. No, it’s not because it’s the time the boys head home to you! It is my new favourite time because each afternoon, I get to see so many of our boys as they’re heading off site, to check in at the end of the day, to say good afternoon, and to tell the boys that we look forward to seeing them all tomorrow. Those of us who are out on Billyard and Cleveland each afternoon have made it our practice to wish the boys good afternoon, but they are now initiating this, making eye contact, tipping their caps and boaters. When I ask a boy if he had a good day, he asks me in return if I have too. I’ve said it before, but it’s the little things that build to something bigger. It’s the consistency of the message, the reinforcement of the behaviours, that shape us as people. We have all noticed, not just in the afternoons, but each morning and throughout each day, that our boys are gracious and well-mannered…not all the time – that would be an unrealistic expectation; but most of the time.

K-2 Happenings

Mrs Chris Gray, K-2 Coordinator

Learning is creation, not consumption. Knowledge is not something a learner absorbs, but something a learner creates, George Couros.

We talk about independent learning at Knox all the time. As a K-2 boy – independence looks very different to that of a Yr 12 boy. The first step is for mum and dad to park the helicopter and trust that your little boy can make his own decisions and start to learn about consequences in a safe environment. Mistakes are an essential aspect of learning and are encouraged at Knox.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

As part of our Knoxigations unit, 'Forces impact the world around us', the Kindergarten boys have been keenly investigating where and how we use forces in our world. As we explore concepts of motion and gravity, they are finding out forces are used and happen everywhere around us. The boys have looked at how they use push and pull in our playground when we climb on the adventure playground equipment and the pirate ship. We even trialled the new playground on Ireland Field! They have also looked at how forces, along with friction, are used when we play soccer on Yeldham Field to put the ball in motion and slow it down.

Year 1 News

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

Year 1 boys have had another fantastic week of fun and learning. As teachers, we love seeing the boys engaged and enjoying their learning. Over the last week we have been exploring where different foods come from. We specifically looked at how honey is made, and how it gets from the beehive to our homes. We were lucky enough to have our very own Year 1 Beekeeper, Danny. Danny shared with us some videos of his bees, hives and the process he and his dad go through to make honey. What an authentic learning experience for our boys. The questions the boys had for Danny were great and the discussion that followed demonstrated the deep learning the boys gained from this experience. Thank you, Beekeeper Danny.

Year 2 News

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

Another wonderful week for the boys of Year 2 as we begin to head toward the end of Term 3. Boys are continuing to explore forces and forms of energy within our Tinkering Towards Tomorrow unit of inquiry. By participating in an incredibly exciting gravity experiment, students have been learning about the components of scientific experiments and the importance of designing a hypothesis (prediction) and reflecting on the results of their experiment. The impact of air resistance on falling objects of varying weights was one that boys found very interesting!

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

This week, our boys continue to make their way through the inquiry cycle as we look at the issue of The Stolen Generation from both Indigenous and Government (at the time) perspectives. The boys are demonstrating their ability to develop deep wonderings and are involved in much rich discussion. Although it is difficult, they are discovering that an event in history can look very different depending on which perspective you are focussing on. Our boys are also learning about how the impact that these events can have for many years to come and how the issue of the Stolen Generation continues to impact today.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

Another great week for the boys of Year 6 as we begin to head toward the end of Term 3. In class this week, the boys are continuing to focus on our Unit of Inquiry on Sustainability. The boys have been investigating the notion of trade, both past and present and are learning about ancient and modern trade routes and the influence trade has on the world today. The boys are investigating the salt trade and silk road and are learning how these early trade routes influenced modern civilisation. The boys are continuing to work on narrative writing and have had a focus on the use of figurative language in their written work and learning how to write within the action/adventure genre. On top of this, each week the boys are spending two hours in their groups to work on their Sustainability project, focusing on developing a solution to one of the current UN Sustainable Development Goals. The focus of this task is the boys working collaboratively, sharing ideas respectfully and learning the life skill of conflict resolution. The boys have done an amazing job thus far and we are looking at ways in which they can share these projects with you early in Term 4. Stay tuned!

Ensembles Information UPDATE

Band Rehearsals Update
As of Week 8, all Bands apart from the Jazz Band, and the Intermediate Band will be rehearsing at school during normal Band time. Boys are to come to band without their instrument, as they are working on a fun drum piece that we hope all ensembles will play together! The Intermediate Band are still going to zoom on Tuesday mornings for Week 8 and 9 as they are making great progress on their pieces online. They will learn the drum piece at their lunchtime rehearsal every Wednesday, from Week 8 until the end of this term. For the remainder of this term, sadly there will be no Jazz Band. Rock Band is still rehearsing every Wednesday recess (note the change from Monday).

String News
The Concert Strings, Prep Orchestra, String Ensemble and Yr 6 String Ensemble are all going really well! They have been rehearsing hard and sound amazing. Keep up the great work stringers! All rehearsals for our string instruments remain the same.
