Sport and our School values
Last Saturday marked the beginning of the summer sports season. It is an absolute joy for me to stand on the sidelines and observe the social and emotional benefits boys experience when representing their school. Saturday sport creates an important opportunity for our boys to contribute to Knox, cultivating an increased commitment with our School values.

I have read a number of books about successful athletes and coaches who invariably provide their insights into sporting success. A common theme expressed by a number of coaches is that success does not simply mean “winning”. Success, even at a professional sporting level, is a peace of mind, attained only through self-satisfaction in knowing an individual made the effort to do the best of which they are capable.

In other words, it’s not the result ... that will look after itself. The common opinion is to focus on the things you can control - EFFORT! Don’t judge yourself on the result, focus on the effort. The result will be the final outcome of your effort level.

Mr Kieran Donohue, Director of PEAK

2021 Applications
We would like to invite students who have competed at the state/national level to apply to join the PEAK program for the next intake. We understand that COVID-19 may have impacted some state/national championships, so PEAK eligibility criteria has been extended to include the last 12 months, or the last state/national championship event that was run.

What is PEAK?
PEAK will be going into its third year of operation and is designed to support high-performing student-athletes who aspire to have a career in elite sport. We aim to develop healthy, resilient and capable students by supporting the holistic wellbeing of each individual, whilst assisting them to achieve their academic and sporting potential.

What a week! Torrential rain, howling winds and hundreds of boys inside sheltering from the elements … a fabulous combination! All things considered, the boys have coped very well with the inclement weather this week and we are grateful that the Year 6 camp was not on this week! We have rescheduled the Summer Sport Gala Day to 18 November and look forward to it being a fine and sunny day for the boys.

One of the things we have all missed the most this year has been our Celebrations of Learning. Having parents in our spaces, boys discussing their learning with the many adults who are genuinely interested in their work. Over the past week, we have had two experiences that are worthy of mention. One was the Year 2 cardboard arcade challenge. The Year 2 boys had a fabulous afternoon of fun, even though their parents could not be on-site to share it with them. Their knowledge and understanding of forces was significant, and they revelled in the application of this knowledge in the creation of their arcade games.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realise they were the big things.
Robert Brault

Martin Seligman, a pioneer in the field of Positive Psychology, has remarked, “when we take time to notice the things that go right – it means we’re getting a lot of little rewards throughout the day”

As parents, gratitude reverses our priorities and helps us appreciate the people and things we do. Through the work of leading researchers like Robert Emmons and Seligman, we know that the virtue of Gratitude is more than just saying, “thank you.” Expressing gratitude reduces stress, increases optimism, and changes your brain, shifting our attention so that our focus is on positive emotions.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

Last week Kindergarten finished our Knoxigations unit on 'Forces impact the world around us'. It is wonderful to reflect upon the level of the boys' engagement. They have loved this Science-based unit, exploring the world around them through conducting experiments to build their knowledge and understanding of the concepts of forces, gravity, motion and friction.

This week we begin our final Knoxigations inquiry ‘Energy Powers and Enhances our World.’ As part of our inquiry the boys will be investigating different forms of energy and how they are used in our world. During our ‘Tuning In’ phase we will introduce the types of energy - heat, light and sound. The boys will identify examples of these types of energy and explain how we use them. We will also be exploring ways in which these types of energy enhance our world.

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

The culmination of our 'Tinkering Towards Tomorrow' unit on Friday last week saw the opening of our Year 2 Arcades! All teams worked extremely hard with the level of detail and planning that went into the design, construction and coding of their arcade games being simply spectacular. The Year 2 teachers were simply in awe of the imagination and dedication the boys put into their games - from hoop toss to basket throwing there were so many forces and energy on display! The laughter, smiles, giggles and excitement was truly a special moment for the Year 2 Teachers to witness with the event being as close to a Celebration of Learning as is possible in the current climate. Keep your eyes peeled for a reflection video in the coming days!

Mrs Tina Ruddock, Year 3 Team Leader

Welcome to Week 3 of the term. Last week, Book Week activities concluded with a ’Teacher Swap’. First thing in the morning, all Prep teaching staff visited a different classroom to share their favourite stories. Well-thumbed favourites sparked happy reading memories as they were dug out their book shelves and read out aloud. It was a joy to watch boys from Kindergarten through to Year 6, get comfortable and settle down into being read a story.

Jerusalema Dance Challenge
Our dance video has been viewed more than 17,000 times on the Knox Facebook page. Thank you! The boys will continue the power of positivity over the coming weeks by sharing with the Prep community information about the influence of music and dance on people’s feelings, the challenges of being a global changemaker as well as instances of global changemakers who ‘start small, think big to change the world’. This will all take place under the umbrella of our final Knoxigations unit.

The excitement was apparent on Monday, as Year 5 held our first student-led conference. The boys and staff were all highly engaged and there was a palpable buzz in the classrooms during every activity. Thank you to Mr Jason Milner (IT Integrator) who planned the event and lead the Year 5 staff; and supported the students in preparing them for delivering their workshops. The event was a huge success and the skills delivered will be long lasting for all involved.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

This week the boys in Year 6 have been finalising their product for their 'Sustainable Solutions' inquiry. Throughout this unit, the boys have been working on a solution to a sustainability issue which is present around the world. The boys have used skills in collaboration, critical and creative thinking as well as expert research skills to research their chosen issue. It has been wonderful to see the ways in which the boys have worked together to reach a common goal. The boys are now focusing on how they can successfully market their product, create a website and design a pitch to convince their peers as to why their idea is the best. We are extremely proud of the work the boys have produced in this unit and are looking forward to them being able to share their work with each other and showcasing some of the incredible ideas they have come up with.

Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.

Children’s Book Week, usually held in August, was celebrated in October this year due to COVID-19. Book Week is recognised across Australia and brings together children, libraries, authors and illustrators, showcasing the importance, benefits and joy of reading for all ages. This is a highlight at the Prep each year, and although our celebrations may have been slightly different to previous years, the energy, creativity and passion exhibited by our students and staff was inescapable.

Book Character Parade
The wet weather did not dampen the spirit of the boys participating in our annual Knox Book Character Parade. Every year we wonder how our boys’ costumes can top previous years, but they always do! There was a colourful display of creative costumes and characters parading around Ireland field. It was fantastic to see so many students passionate by the characters in their favourite books, or their interpretation of this year’s theme, ‘Curious Creatures, Wild Minds.’ Thank you for all your efforts to ensure the boys were able to come prepared and inspired by books they know and love.

Mr Martin Haywood

I hope everyone enjoyed some sport over the weekend prior to some heavy rain arriving on Saturday afternoon. If ever you want some rain to fall – feel free to organise a game of Cricket!

Many Senior School teams played in CAS Round 1 against local friends Barker College, and we are extremely proud of all boys and the coaching staff. Unfortunately, some games were cancelled later in the afternoon but we were fortunate to get through so much in the morning and the spirit, effort and sportsmanship continues to make us all extremely proud across all codes.
