YEAR 9 WEEK 3 TERM 3 2020

Year 9 Week 3 Term 3 2020

Hero Image

In an age of hyper-connectivity, the power and art of conversations is being lost. At times, they can be a process to clarify your own thinking, they can present an opportunity to be educated, they can be a creative spark that changes your whole life or they can powerfully give someone a voice. Conversations are a great place to think dialectically and to practise empathy. Over the last fortnight, the Year 9 cohort have been busily engaging in conversations with the women in their lives as part of our Virile Agitur Man campaign. Much of what happens in life can speed by us, and we just end up following those who have gone before us; almost sheep-like. Whilst this does not always mean that what our predecessors have done before is bad, it does make sense at times, to stop, think, evaluate and consider your steps before moving forward. The motive for us to get our boys talking to the women in their lives is to do just this: ask questions, listen, empathise, validate and then evaluate.

In Year Meeting this week, Mr Openshaw had the opportunity to share his experience of speaking to the women in his life, namely: Mama Openshaw; his wife extraordinaire; friend, colleague, and the one-and-only Ms Yuan. There were some really insightful views expressed from these women, representing a variety of generations and parts of the community. We would like to express our gratitude to the three women for being willing to share their views in the public domain and to Mr Openshaw for modelling the interview process so thoughtfully.

We are heading into the 'meaty' part of the third term, as we start to hit Assessments, project hand-ins and the last few rounds of the CAS Winter Sports season. I encourage each boy to ensure he is on top of his weekly schedule; ensuring he is managing his time well and making sufficient time to eat, study, exercise, socialise and rest appropriately. Your son has an experienced, caring and ready-to-help Mentor, so please do feel free to reach out to your son’s Mentor if there is anything we can do to support your son in getting the balance right in the aforementioned things.

This week has seen our cohort tackle a couple of in-class assessment tasks and whilst it was a busy one for the boys it was great to speak to some of them after the assessments and check how they felt they went. There were a range of answers obviously but overall they have all given it their best and are now eagerly awaiting for their results. I hope the boys take the time this weekend to relax and enjoy some quality time with family and friends.
