YEAR 7 WEEK 9 TERM 2 2020

Year 7 Week 9 Term 2 2020

We have been so proud of how the boys have handled the start to their senior schooling. While it may have been a less than ideal start to Year 7, the adaptability and drive they have shown to do their best has been impressive, and highlights their potential as a Year Group. We always set our standards high, and the boys have met our challenges every step of the way. Ms Kennedy and I encourage all students to take stock and reflect on all their achievements from Semester 1. They should be proud of their progress and think on how to continue this positive trajectory.

The holidays are the perfect opportunity to refresh and recharge for the second semester. Upon returning to school next term, boys will have the chance to consider goals for the second half of the year and will have these conversations with their Mentors. Some of these goals may be academically orientated, while others may be looking for ways to extend themselves outside of the classroom. Knox will be holding a Leadership Summit at the beginning of Term 3, and perhaps this will be a good opportunity for some to explore. Although they're only at the beginning of Senior School, there are plenty of boys who are already showing leadership qualities and can look to challenge themselves in this field. Looking forward to the start of Term 3, it is important that the boys return with the correct uniform and abide by Knox haircut standards. While this may seem like a small detail, we have reiterated that looking the part says a lot about belonging to our community and being part of the School.

I’m looking forward to seeing the boys play some games in their chosen winter sport next term. I know that they have been training hard, and can’t wait to get into their boots and represent Knox!

I hope that you are able to spend some quality time with your son in the three-week break. Encourage him to spend time with his friends and away from his technology. I know that both the boys and staff have had plenty of time squinting at screens this year, so it will be worth their time to move away from the screens and continue to develop their communication and social skills.

We made it! It is officially the end of Term 2 and time for a well-earned break for the Class of 2025. They have managed to navigate the challenges thrown at them in the first half of this year superbly. I hope the boys take some time during the holidays to relax, unwind and spend some time with family and friends.

With Winter Sport returning in Term 3, please take a moment to check that your son has the full and correct uniform required for his sports choice. You are able to order through Flexischools any items missing, and collect at a pre-arranged time from the Uniform Shop. A reminder that on return from holidays, the students are required to wear their blazer and boater to and from school as per uniform standards.

Language choices came out this week for the boys to pick for Year 8. Please consider the available options over the break and have the form returned to me by the end of Week 1 Term 3.

I would like to thank you all for your support during the first half of this year. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know your sons. I anticipate that the second half of the year will be smoother sailing in comparison to this half!

Have a wonderful holiday break and I look forward to hearing what everyone got up to over the break.

See you next term.

School holiday sports training for Senior School
Following on from the Headmaster's announcements last week that CAS Winter Sport will start in Term 3, please note the training schedule for the coming holidays can now be found on the Knox app. We are mindful it is holiday time and a valuable time with family, however if your boy(s) are available we would love to give them the opportunity to best prepare for the winter season.

As always, if there are any questions regarding the schedule, please do not hesitate to email the Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy or directly with your son’s chosen sport.

The Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy will also have more information prior to the holidays regarding exactly how a day at each facility will look for players, staff and spectators on game day. This is being put together following government guidelines and the School policy regarding providing a COVID-19 safe environment for all.

Language Choices

Year 7 Language Choice

As learning a language in Year 8 is mandatory at Knox, Year 7 students will need to choose a language to study next year. Students can choose from French, German, Japanese and Chinese. Yesterday your son received an email with an explanation of how to choose their Year 8 language, including login details. The closing date for submission is Friday 24th July (Week 1, Term 3).

Our Year 8 language courses are designed as beginner courses and aimed at students with little or no knowledge of the language. For example, they may have studied it in primary school. However, if students have a background in a language, we expect that they would choose a different language to study in Year 8. Please note that the Department of Languages & Cultures offers additional afternoon classes for Heritage Chinese students to help them maintain and develop their home language. At HSC level, there are separate courses for background and heritage speakers of Chinese and Japanese.

There are many reasons to learn a language and it can be a very rewarding experience; however, it is important that your son chooses the right language for him. Rather than selecting the language based on what friends are choosing, we always encourage students to choose the language that they most enjoy or feel that they connect with in some way. Finding some intrinsic motivation to learn the language is more likely to make it an enjoyable and successful experience that they will hopefully choose to continue with in Stage 5 and 6.

Year 7 Artworks

Year 7 Visual Art students were asked to design a sculpture for the exhibition 'Sculpture by the Sea' which communicated their views on a topical issue of their choice. They used their drawing skills to record where they would install their artwork at a site specific location at the Sydney event.
