YEAR 12 WEEK 9 TERM 2 2020

Year 12 Week 9 Term 2 2020

Hero Image

On Wednesday night, around 40 Year 12 boys were involved in the Tomorrow Man workshops, attempting to break down what it is to be a man and rewrite the rule book to develop healthy ways of relating. It was an incredible two hours for the boys of opening up, sharing experiences, gaining insight into what others in the Class of 2020 are going through and establishing brand new connections and empathy for members of this unique cohort. For the boys, just knowing that they are not alone, or that other boys could now gain an insight into their story and be there as a support was incredibly powerful. So many 'I’m so sorry mate, I didn’t know you were going through that' moments were shared between boys who have never really had a connection before. I hope that the boys who were part of these groups can now take what they experienced and continue to create a safe space for men to share with men, knowing that it is okay to show emotion and to ask for help. Our facilitator stated that he had never seen a group of boys be so open and honest with each other so quickly and showing such empathy. These boys are truly, very special.

We had a wonderful opportunity to hear one of Ryan Thom’s HSC saxophone pieces on Thursday at Year Meeting. It was wonderful! Well done, Ryan! We hope to be able to hear more from the Music and Drama students in the short term remaining before their HSC performances.

With Year 12 about to enter their final term at Knox Grammar School, it is important they continue to fully embrace the opportunities provided here. The Seniors' Hall is open throughout the study break with teachers providing seminars and simulated exam conditions to refine the boys’ knowledge, understanding and examination technique. There will be opportunities to watch Drama and Music performances, celebrate the major works of our artists, Design and Industrial Tech students, and continue to be involved in the Knox Sports program. The excitement of the winter sports season is upon us and we all can’t wait for the Class of 2020 and the Tartan Army to cheer on the Black and Blue at the Volleyball, Tennis, Football, AFL and Rugby on Saturday 18 July!

We trust the break will be restful yet productive. We have loved having Year 12 back this term and are truly grateful for the time they have had as a cohort, bonding together through shared experiences and some difficult times. With the ever-present threat of a second wave of COVID 19, we hope that our vision for Term 3 will be able to come to fruition as we plan with excitement all the end of Year 12 celebrations. We will see you in Term 3!

The holidays are here! I know all of the boys are looking forward to a break, as I'm sure are all parents. I would like to say a big THANK YOU; as the boys have been amazing this term, being flexible and obliging in their adoption of the new protocols we have introduced. It has been a treat to be able to see every boy, every day. I'm sure the boys will be looking forward to a quieter start to their day, without Mrs Billington and I greeting them with a loud and enthusiastic 'Good Morning' the very minute they arrive. Not always what they are looking for so early in the day, however, we have thoroughly enjoyed this time.

A reminder that the Seniors’ Hall will be open over the three-week term break from 8am-4pm. The Academic Coaches will also be available throughout this time from 10am-1pm. The Senior Library and Boater Cafe will be closed. The Year 12 2020 Trial Exam Schedule can be found here. Please click here for the Year 12 July Study Break Sessions, the Study Planner is here and finally click here for a copy of the Academic Coach Roster. These are all available on the Year 12 portal.

Please understand; while we wish for as many Year 12 events to take place as normal, we are currently limited by government protocols around gatherings. As per the Headmaster's Letter on 11 June, the following dates have been booked:

• Monday 17 June - Friday 17 July - HSC Support
• Wednesday 19 August - Tuesday 1 September - HSC Trial Examinations
• Thursday 3 September - Year 12 Formal
• Wednesday 16 September - Back to Prep and Final Chapel Service
• Thursday 17 September - Year 12 Final Assembly and CAS Assembly
• Friday 18 September - Boarders' Chapel Service and Dinner and Carnival Day
• Monday 21 September - Year 12 Valedictory Ceremony and Year 12 Valedictory Dinner

As the situation regarding COVID-19 continues to change, we do anticipate some dates and events may possibly change. We will continue to keep you updated as soon as new information comes to light.

Saturday 18 July is going to be a great unofficial start to Term 3 with sport starting! I am really looking forward to an amazing day and the opportunity to catch up with many of you. Please read the Community Notices for more details.

I would like to wish everyone all the best for a restful holiday break - it does seem a little surreal that we only have only one term left.

Take care.

The Academy Portfolio Leadership Team will be running the Knox Leadership Conference for 2020 on Sunday 19 July, the last day of the upcoming holiday break, from 1pm - 4pm. The event will take place in the Wenkart Theatre and all current Prefects, PLT reps and Peer Support Leaders will be in attendance.

We are delighted to be able to announce that we will be live streaming the event to all those other students in the Senior School, and also to student leaders from other local schools, that would like to watch the Conference and learn from the quite brilliant and diverse leaders that we have engaged for the day. Please register via the JotForm link in this invitation. The live stream details will be sent out a few days prior to the event.

We have Chairman of the Knox Council and CEO of Goldman Sachs Australia and New Zealand, Mr Simon Rothery; media personality and former star Australian cricketer, Mr Michael Slater; prominent journalist and author, Mr David Leser and former recipient of The Queen’s Young Leader and NSW Young Volunteer of the Year Awards, Ms Emily Milton Smith presenting on the day. Our speakers cover Business, Sport, the Arts and Social Justice and will be able to provide incredible insight on their experiences as leaders.

Please contact me if you have any questions about the Conference and I hope that as many Knox students and families as possible can tune in and enjoy and learn from these exceptional leaders.

School holiday sports training

Following on from the Headmaster's announcements last week that CAS winter sport will start in Term 3, please note the training schedule for the coming holidays can now be found on the Knox app. We are mindful it is holiday time and a valuable time with family, however if your boy(s) are available we would love to give them the opportunity to best prepare for the winter season.

As always, if there are any questions regarding the schedule, please do not hesitate to email the Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy or directly with your son’s chosen sport.

The Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy will also have more information prior to the holidays regarding exactly how a day at each facility will look for players, staff and spectators on game day. This is being put together following government guidelines and the School policy regarding providing a COVID-19 safe environment for all.
