YEAR 12 WEEK 6 TERM 3 2020

Year 12 Week 6 Term 3 2020

Hero Image

There has been great positivity amongst the cohort this week as the boys are rewarded for all of their hard work prior to and during the Trials. It has been great to witness the energy as the boys return to the Seniors' Hall following their examinations. All the best to those in their final push next week and to those Japanese Continuers students who have an HSC exam tomorrow. Congratulations to the Drama students who have just completed their HSC individual performances and Industrial Technology students who submitted their major works yesterday. The boys have all been working so hard to refine these works and should be proud of their achievements.

Week 7 represents a very important part of the Year 12 academic journey. As the boys return to school, they should act on the feedback from their examinations and assessments. This is a critical time to consolidate content, summarise notes, refine sample responses, ask questions and engage with their teachers. Most importantly it is a time to collaborate and share with their peers as this will drive their academic results and support them to achieve their goals for 2020. They should also use the time to engage with all aspects of the Total Fitness approach to wellbeing, including physical exercise.

Congratulations to Will Choi, Oliver Weeding, Will Fernandez, Allen Chen, Micah Zhao, Lachlan Hwang and all of the Knox debaters, who contributed towards Knox winning the CAS Debating for only the second time ever! In addition the 1st Debating team placed equal 1st for only the fourth time in CAS history. We look forward to seeing these boys displaying their skills during the Week 9 celebrations as they debate some very game staff!

Please be reminded that your son’s uniform and grooming expectations remain the same for the final few weeks of Year 12. Mr James is always keen to remind the boys that this reflects their respect for Knox and represents the pillars of the School community.

We look forward to celebrating the final few weeks of term and I know that the boys will continue to take everything in their stride, as they have done all year!

Enjoy the warm weather this weekend.

I would like to congratulate Tom Mountstephens for being selected as part of the CAS Winter Sport Merit Volleyball team.

On Thursday Mr Ranyard and I had the privilege to see the Industrial Technology Major Works. Wow - they are amazing! I have included a couple of photos below.

Extension Science students who study HSC Extension Science are required to complete a Scientific Research Project on a topic of their choice. As part of this process, the boys acquire core academic and research skills. Boys learn how to conduct a detailed scientific literature review and plan, conduct and report on their own scientific research. Please click here to watch the Year 12 Extension Science video.

The Presiding Officers of the HSC Trials have stated that the boys' behaviour, attendance and attention has been exceptional. We could not be prouder of our boys.

Please click here to read an important letter from AIS NSW concerning prioritised COVID-19 testing for HSC students. Students taking the 2020 HSC exams will now have their COVID-19 test results fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test that they are HSC students. To find the nearest testing clinic click here.

The remainder of the term is full of HSC preparation and celebration of the boys' time at Knox. With the feedback the boys get from their teachers, it is important that they take a considerable amount of time to stop and implement the feedback provided. If some of the results are not what was expected, boys should take the time to talk to their teacher about areas to work on. With the Trials being perfect practice for the HSC Exams, the boys will continue to go from strength to strength in their preparation for next term.

Classes resume for Year 12 on Wednesday 2 September. All students are expected to wear full school uniform, have a Knox standard haircut and be clean shaven.

With so many important correspondence at the moment, please ensure your contact details are correct on Parent Lounge.

Tomorrow is the start of the Ride With Richter challenge and with the weather forecast to be lovely, I will hopefully be able to get the first 10km ticked off my commitment. Please join me in this challenge and support Alex.

Have a lovely weekend.

Fast tracking COVID-19 test results for HSC students

Students taking the 2020 HSC exams will now have their COVID-19 test result fast tracked through pathology. They simply need to advise the nurse or doctor doing the test they are HSC students.

Results will be fast tracked to reduce disruption to their studies and exams. We also want to reduce potential anxiety around getting tested and ensure students self-isolate at home until results are known. This will help protect the whole community.

It is important that all HSC students:

·         Stay 1.5m apart where possible

·         Wear a mask if physical distancing isn’t possible

·         Get tested asap if they have even the mildest of symptoms

·         Tell the clinician doing the test they are a HSC student and to mark the referral ‘Urgent - HSC student’

·         Stay home and self-isolate until results are known

·         Receive a negative test result before returning to school; showing the school a screenshot of an SMS result is sufficient

·         Call the contact number provided by the clinic if results are not received within 36 hours

As social young adults, senior students may be at greater risk of COVID-19 than the younger children at school.

They’re also more likely to be out and about in situations which could put them at risk of COVID-19 if they don’t stay vigilant.

Knox Track and Field Series and Nitro Challenge

knox/bios/2021/10/22/Haywood_Martin.jpg

I would like to remind all Senior School boys that they are invited to take part in our Knox Track and Field Meet Series from this Saturday at Gillespie Field. Despite there being no official CAS Track and Field Season due to COVID-19, Knox is determined to push ahead with an internal Track and Field Series to support their physical and mental health.

The event will take the form of a ‘Nitro Challenge’, with boys invited to take part in a series of individual and team events, which will be a lot of fun.

Senior School boys should arrive at 10am for training (hurdles, sprints, middle distance, javelin, discus, long and high jump) followed by the Nitro Challenge from 11.30am to 1pm. Boys are also welcome to simply attend the training session at 10am, or just the Nitro event, boys are not required to attend both sessions unless they desire.

The events are taking place each Saturday until Week 8 (Saturday 29 August, Saturday 5 September, Saturday 12 September). A reminder, we are unfortunately unable to have any parent spectators on-site due to COVID-19 protocols. Please drop-off your son and return to collect him at the end of the session.

For more information, please contact Mr Matt Fowler, Head of Athletics.

Ride with Richter
Ten months ago, the Knox community received the news that now Year 12 student Alex Richter had an accident on his mountain bike, resulting in a spinal injury. After 10 months of hospitalisation and rehabilitation, he was discharged and given the all-clear to return to school. The Stage 6 Team worked with Alex and his family to put a gradual return to school plan into place, which included doing the HSC over a few years. These intentions were short lived as Alex decided he wanted to be back at school full time and complete his HSC this year! Despite having missed three terms of class work, Alex is currently completing his Trial HSC exams in all subjects and is on track to meet all NESA requirements to be eligible to complete his HSC with the Class of 2020. Wow!

I am proud to commend to you a fundraising initiative that kicks off this Saturday. Register now at the Ride With Richter website which is a challenge to either ride, run, row or walk from 29 August to 20 September (Tour de France dates). The idea is to commit to a goal within one of these activities. I have heard of some lofty targets within the Stage 6 team as they endeavour to ‘Ride With Richter’. Me, I will be aiming to walk and row as part of the challenge. I encourage the entire Knox community to register for this event either as an individual or as a family.
