YEAR 12 WEEK 6 TERM 1 2020

Year 12 Week 6 Term 1 2020

Hero Image

International Women’s Day was celebrated this week. Earlier in the week, many boys in Year 12 witnessed Salliane McClelland from the Hornsby Women’s Shelter speak about the importance of community support and how this breeds resilience, even when faced with difficult circumstances. On Thursday, we were lucky to have Melissa Doyle present her thoughts on the role that men have in challenging long held and misplaced perceptions and championing equaity for women. Mr James challenged the boys to be advocates for equality and Luke Schofield led a critical discussion of gender issues with Nick Reynolds, James Constable and their peers from Pymble Ladies' College. The Netball game also acted as a fundraiser for the Hornsby Women’s Shelter.

A warming story came our way after Saturday’s Firsts Volleyball game. With the scores locked at 24-24, Adam Barnes attempted to block a Cranbrook shot, which was adjudged to have gone out. Upholding the core value of integrity, Adam informed the umpire that he had in fact touched the ball, thereby giving the point to Cranbrook. These types of decisions are extremely difficult to make during the heat of battle because competitive instinct can take over. It only serves to highlight that Adam Barnes is upholding the same ideals as his namesake, Adam Gilchrist – well done!

Netball 'Coach' Report

Last night the Knox boys played the Pymble girls in a crowd-pleasing, physical game of Netball. In the first 10 seconds we dominated, until the first, second and third attempt at goal missed and Pymble turned the ball over to score. They then scored again, and again.  The girls dominated with their skill, physicality, strength and smart play as they worked around the height and speed of the boys and ended up winning 34-12. They shot at almost 100% which was hard to compete with. Our boys were pretty good with the rules, but often played too quickly which ended in wild passes. Pymble’s attack end was too good for our defence and the boys came away with a new respect for the game and the girls’ ability, which was an apt ending to a week where we have celebrated International Women’s Day. Knox Man of the Match would have to go to Will O’Sullivan who was impressive in defence. Tyson Bujak-Upton was only inches away from the goal post – which was very helpful for us as he managed to score quite a few of our goals!  Special mention to Alex Kerr for his hard work in keeping all the boys hydrated and Sam Nicholl for captaining the team.

This wouldn’t have happened without the hard work of Mitch Westhuizen and Kale Gabila. Some boys expressed this morning that last night was the best school experience they have had so far. The culture between the students from both schools was respectful, competitive, fun and it really was a wonderful night. There will be many more great year 12 experiences to come – the next one being the CAS Swimming and Diving next week.

CAS Cricket

Congratulations to Dan Hardyman and Lachie Donaldson for being selected to represent CAS Cricket in matches against both ISA and GPS schools.

In the match vs ISA at Trinity, batting first Lachie scored 15no off 15 balls and Dan scored 7 off 7 balls, putting on a run-a-ball partnership of 19 at the end of the innings to see CAS through to a total of 9/209 off their allotted 50 overs. In response, ISA won the game in the 49th over to finish on 8/212. Dan bowled 4 overs with 0/15, however he took 2 catches with one of them being an incredible diving catch on the boundary in the 2nd last over to give the CAS boys a chance of victory. Lachie also kept tidily and finished with a stumping.

The following week, the boys took on the GPS side at Joeys. Again batting after winning the toss, CAS finished on 9/207 off its allotted 50 overs. Lachie scored 7 off 13 balls towards the end of the innings, however it was Dan’s 14no off 10 balls (in an unbroken last wicket partnership of 15) that eventually saw the side pass 200 and provide them with a better shot at victory. In the field, Dan bowled 6 overs to finish with 0/21 however it was Lachie’s performance behind the stumps that really helped the team finish with the ‘W’. His 2 catches, a stumping and crucial early saves down the leg side ultimately proved vital in an exciting 3 run win for CAS.

Well done boys. Great memories to have.
