YEAR 12 WEEK 5 TERM 2 2020

Year 12 Week 5 Term 2 2020

Hero Image

What a privilege it was to have Sarah-Jane (S-J) Staszak come and speak to the boys this week. S-J was injured in a routine medical procedure six and half years ago that left her with quadriplegia. As an adventurer and someone who loved the outdoors, particularly skiing, she struggled to come to terms with her injury; however, through her support network and mentors, found her love of life again. She has been heli skiing in Alaska, abseiled off cliffs and continues to live a life of adventure, albeit with different challenges than she would have ever envisioned. She spoke about her journey out of the depths of despair and back into a life which she said is, in some ways, better than it was before. The boys were inspired by her message and many thanked her afterwards.

It is halfway through Term 2 already and the assessment load is quite heavy at the moment. Receiving results and sitting assessments means the boys will be experiencing some highs and lows over the next few weeks. Year 12 is always an interesting journey, and 2020 has been a particularly memorable one. The boys need to work through their feedback, target areas in which they can improve and continue to make steady progress. As a cohort, they are performing extraordinarily well and are encouraged each time just to do their best. It has been wonderful to see some extra-curricular groups recommence and sports training out on the field. How adaptable are these young men becoming! Keep enjoying these function free weekends, as before too long, it is likely to get busy again – we hope!

Next week the Boater Café will re-open. There will be hand sanitiser available at the entry and exit points for the boys to use. So as to reduce contact points and minimise queues, the boys will only be able to use their student ID card (top up by FlexiSchools) or via EFTPOS to purchase food or drinks. I will include the weekly menu in the newsletter. Unfortunately, the microwaves won’t be operating in the Seniors' Hall until further notice.

Please be reminded that Year 12 will be finishing school at 3.10pm. This is to allow the boys to catch an earlier train than the younger students. All boys should be prompt in leaving if catching public transport, to help ease the congestion at Warrawee station.

Boys will have access to their lockers as of today on a rotation basis, to help with any congestion in the locker area. Please ensure your son wears his Boater and Blazer to and from school. Year 12 jerseys must not be worn with out a blazer during this time.

If your son is driving to school, please complete this form for our records and also, as the Headmaster mentioned, if we have to send the boys home, they will be allowed to drive without calling you, subject to this form being completed.

The Community Prefect Team

The Community Portfolio aims to connect the three campuses of Knox; Knox Senior, Knox Prep and WPS. This week during mentor, the Community portfolio had students from both Years 11 and Year 12 spend some time writing cards to students in Year 5 and Year 6.

The cards contained short messages with a positive aura to welcome back the prep students to school. Together, over 350 handwritten cards were written and will be received by the Years 5 and 6 students next week. Stay tuned for the reaction photos and possibly, some cards back!

Sport

A reminder for everyone to check a revised training schedule for Weeks 6 to 9 on the School app. There have been some changes to the current schedule as buses become available at 5.30pm.

Whilst there will be no Saturday sport or competition through to end of Term 2, we have taken the opportunity to run a speed and fitness session at Gillespie each Saturday from 8am. This session holds many opportunities to possibly gain some speed, build fitness, enjoy a healthy start to the weekend, dusting of the 'cobwebs' and put your name in front of Knox Athletic selectors for Term 3 selection. A great opportunity so please encourage your boy(s) to come along and enjoy a good workout. Everyone is welcome.

For all inquiries please email Matt Fowler.

Uniform Shop - Year 12 Colours Awards

Year 12 students would normally already have their summer colours added to their blazers at the end of Term 1 but due to recent events this wasn’t possible. To ensure they do not miss out we will be able to submit their blazers for summer colours for embroidery during the Term 2 holidays. A member of staff from the Uniform Shop will be in the WSA Meeting room on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday during the last three weeks of Term 2 at lunchtime to confirm colours received from the latest list and to complete paperwork. Due to social distancing guidelines, students will be requested to wait outside the WSA Meeting room and enter the room one at a time to complete paperwork.

Please note: as the students will also receive additional colours at the end of Term 3, to avoid additional costs such as dry cleaning and pocket removal, students may wait until during the Trials to hand their blazer in to get all colours added.

All students must check their school reports issued at the end of Term 1 and the list located on the outside of the WSA Administration office.

Each student submitting a blazer must do the following:

• Complete this form and ensure it is signed by a parent.
• Insert the form in the top pocket of the blazer when handed in.
• All badges and personal possessions to be removed from the blazer pockets.
• The Blazer must be clearly named with a laundry marker so it can be identified.
• For Colours from previous years that have been not added, the student must supply the uniform with evidence of the award either by sight by a Uniform Shop staff member or copies of the certificate.

Any blazer received without the completed paperwork will not be embroidered.

Blazers must be handed in by 4.30pm on Friday 26 June or their last day of attendance prior to this date. A rail and coat hangers will be available in the WSA.

The blazers will be available for collection from 1pm on Friday 17 July from the Uniform shop. If they are ready earlier, there will be a notification on the Knox app and the Uniform Shop Facebook Page.

If this deadline is missed, the next opportunity to receive Year 12 colours is during the Trials period.

KNOX FLIX

Would you believe…Knox Flix 2020 registrations are now open!

This year we have two versions of one theme, and two versions of one competition. The theme is either 'I Believe!' or 'Would you believe…'

Tell us a tall tale, or a deep truth. Similarly this year for the first time you have the option of submitting a narrated story board, or a film.

All film entries will need to be accompanied with an outline of how you worked within the isolation rules as they existed at various times of filming.

Please read the attached information and register here.

TEAMS Your team can comprise any number and combination of students, from any year group.

LENGTH Film : 2 – 4.5 Minutes Narrated Story Board : 1 – 3.5 minutes.

CRITERIA All entries must be wholly original work and produced specifically for the 2020 Knox Flix competition. The majority of your entry must be student originated content. All entries must clearly relate to the theme – 'I believe!' or 'Would you believe?'. The entry specifications require a frame rate of 25 frames per second in 16:9 PAL format.

COPYRIGHT Your film should not include copyright music or material (i.e. the latest song or film clip). If your entry does include copyright material, your entry cannot be shown outside the school or online for legal reasons. Royalty free music is preferred and can be sourced online.

TOOLS You may use whatever equipment and software you are able to access. The library has video cameras and tripods available for you to borrow, but if you have a mobile phone camera and know how to use iMovie on your MacBook to edit, you’re ready to roll. However, please make sure you film in landscape not portrait if you are using an iPhone!

SOCIAL ISOLATION. This year all aspects of social isolation rules must be observed. As such, please submit a written outline of the measures you have employed in order to meet the legal requirements associated with COVID-19. This should include filming dates where the rules have changed over time.

ACTOR CONSENT All actors appearing in your entry must sign the consent form giving permission to be filmed and shown on film in public. Forms must be handed in with your entry.

APPROPRIATENESS Entries must be appropriate in content: violence and the use of vulgarity or explicit themes are not accepted. Should you have doubts here, please seek advice. Teams with entries deemed inappropriate may be given the opportunity to alter their entry before being disqualified from the competition.

KEY DATES Entries due Monday 3 August, Week 3 Term 3 at 9am. This year the winning entries will be shared during an online assembly.

JUDGING Knox Staff, in communication with industry professionals, will convene an on-line panel through which all prizes will be awarded. Judging will be based on how well you use your chosen aspect, the story/plot and quality of overall production (film/sound/lighting/effects etc.).

PRIZES Best Film 1st $450, 2nd $150. Best Narrated storyboard $350, Best Cinematography $150, Best Story/Writer $150, Best Actor $150. These prizes will be awarded in the form of JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards split between members of the winning team.

REGISTRATION Pre-production registrations are due by the last day of Term 2. Please complete the registration form.

QUESTIONS Please direct all questions, whether technical or competition related to Mr Fisher.

CONCLUSION You have to be in it to win it. The scope of this project cos as unlimited as your imagination and creativity. Have fun with it!
