Leadership
It used to be that leadership equated with years of accomplishment, education, experience, and age. Thankfully, true leadership knows no age. Leaders are people of any age who just ‘stand up’. They grab your attention, take the initiative, are compelling, and set an example.

Unfortunately, today the world is showing signs of hunger for authentic leadership. There is a cynicism with many in authority and a growing anger at the lack of moral fortitude to be found among some leaders. Fortunately, I am filled with optimism as I witness, almost daily, the empathy and resilience of our young men and boys at Knox. Their courage gives me confidence that young people can manifest the best in humanity, and that is a light that will shine for generations to come.

If Week 1 saw the Class of 2021 hit the ground running, Week 2 has seen no signs of slowing down. It has been both a fantastic and important week for this group of young men.

In the academic realm, the numbers have been crunched and the KAI Interviews have taken place. These conversations have been a wonderful opportunity to take stock of academic progress, review and tweak goals, as well as put together a solid roadmap as to how best to achieve these. Boys are reminded to reach out to their support networks at school if the news isn’t quite what they were hoping for, and are to be reminded that there is plenty of time and people in their corner to improve before the HSC.

One of the highlights of the year was without doubt the Rugby outing to Bankwest in support of the 1st XV last Saturday night. The Year 12 presence both on and off the field was the most significant, and the Team Leaders couldn’t have been prouder. Behaviour was exemplary, and the School spirit was enormous, manifesting in the form of rousing war cries and beating drums. The stadium was far from capacity, but the noise coming from the Knox boys made it sound like it was a sell-out. In addition, the players showed enormous character and hung tough against a slick Joeys outfit. A wonderful night in every aspect.

The KAI interviews this week have provided an ideal opportunity to set goals for the term, and beyond. It is important that the boys look beyond the KAI itself and focus on how they can improve the Knox Academic mark (KAM) via strategies that enable effective study and assessment preparation. This is a good time to raise the four quadrant approach that we refer to regularly (Quality, Necessity, Distraction and Regret) and we will address this again at Year Meeting next week to encourage the boys to plan the term.

To lay a good foundation for the boys’ third last term of secondary schooling, we challenge the boys to do the following:

I hope everyone enjoy a great start to the winter 2021 season playing for Knox. It was a wonderful weekend with so many highlights. The joy on the boys' faces, the spirit, mateship, helping one another in tough times and supporting each other were just a few of the many experiences our boys enjoyed last Saturday.

Last week, one of Australia’s most successful Wallaby captains, John Eales, spoke to our winter sports captains, PEAK students and Firsts teams about the importance of leading with integrity. He shared six pieces of advice for any emerging leader and I would like to share these with everyone.

1. Leadership is all about taking the complex and making it simple and then taking the simple and making it compelling!
• Your job as a leader is to take people on a journey with you – through what you say and what you do.
• You need to take what you are trying to achieve and make it simple for those around you to understand and follow.
• You need to make it compelling enough for those around you to want to get involved.

ANZAC Service and Parade

We are pleased to announce that the Knox ANZAC Service and Parade will go ahead on Sunday 2 May 2021 at 8.30am with some modifications and restrictions. All students in the Cadet Unit are expected to attend this event.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we will be limiting spectators to two tickets per Year 11 and 12 Cadets, Pipes and Drums, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Gallery Choir students only. We will continue to monitor government advice and recommendations, and should more tickets become available, we will update parents. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

The service and parade will be live streamed here: www.knox.nsw.edu.au/anzac.

The Kuringai Special Olympics Fun Run is back - Sunday 30 May
This annual event is where our Knox students from Years 10-12 are buddies to the special Olympians on the Fun Run and Barry Easy Walk. This is a great opportunity for community service and adding to your son’s Certificate of Global Competency. There will be presentations at schools but families can sign up and support this amazing event and ensure children with a disability have the opportunity to participate in sport and stay healthy through the Northern Special Olympics exercise programs.

Volunteers needed for our senior students

As we head towards the end of the year the Learning Enhancement Department is in need of parent volunteers to read and/or write for some of our senior students in the HSC Trials, the HSC and end of year exams.

As a writer, it would be your task to act as an extension of the student by writing as they dictate their response to an examined question. As a reader, it would be your task to read the examined question aloud for clarity. As a reader/writer you would be asked to perform both tasks for the one student.

Rugby - Bankwest Stadium

Last Saturday evening, I attended my first Rugby game travelling out to the Knox vs Joeys game at Bankwest Stadium. The commitment by the players was phenomenal. The support from the Knox crowd led by the vocal Tartan Army even more so!
