Dear Year 12 families

I’m writing to provide you with a brief, interim update regarding our Year 12 farewell events this term.

We are currently working through the list of planned events and the current restrictions to determine the best way forward. While the safety and wellbeing of our community is our absolute priority, we want to give the events as much opportunity as possible to proceed so that the boys are farewelled in a fitting way.

I anticipate we will send you an update next week regarding the farewell events. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

It is hard to believe that the Class of 2020 has entered their final term of schooling. What a year it has been! This has definitely been a year of firsts and a year of uncertainty; and yet, the boys continue to impress with their optimism and resilience. Mr James spoke to them this week about how grateful he was for their positive attitude and the way they approached disappointments and cancellations. We are so proud of them and look forward to the many opportunities there will be this term to celebrate their achievements.

As the Class of 2020 start the countdown to the Trial Examinations, it is important that we are all aware of the many mixed emotions that the boys will go through over the coming weeks. Most will confidently look forward to the academic challenges that lie ahead. This period of time, however, can initiate stressors that can challenge wellbeing and have the potential to bring on mood changes. This week we have seen a few such situations, and I have been so proud of the way that many of the affected boys have reached out and sought assistance. One of the greatest strengths of this group is the way in which they look out for each other.

The Tomorrow Man Workshops organised by Mr White are a fantastic way for boys to help learn some strategies for opening up as well as caring for others. The feedback from the last workshop was overwhelmingly positive with one participant stating it was the best workshop he had ever taken part in. I would encourage you to talk about this with your son and sign him up. Please note, there are limited places, so act quickly. It is vitally important that the boys rally around over the coming weeks to encourage each other and to also look out for signs of stress or withdrawal. Working hard to achieve their very best whilst also keeping the HSC in perspective is key and we are confident that our year group will do this such is their motivation, work ethic and their care for one another.

What a joy it was on the weekend to see the boys finally start their winter sports season, albeit without student spectators. I think this year has taught many of us to be grateful for the opportunities we do have and to never take anything for granted. The fact that a group of boys are allowed to watch the Rugby this weekend is very exciting. We wish the debaters all the best for tonight’s competition as well as all our sporting teams as they take on St Aloysius' College. For our Drama students, the Trial Examinations begin next week and we are confident they will be well prepared and ready to show their skills and excel in their performances. I am very much looking forward to watching them all next week.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay safe.

Welcome back to our last term for the Class of 2020! It is with excitement and trepidation that we head into the final stretch of Year 12. The boys have taken on board all the changes with great respect and I couldn't be prouder of them. Please remind the boys to eat well and to get lots of rest as the next few weeks are going to be very busy and they will need every ounce of energy they can muster.

Over the holidays I was fortunate enough to be able to watch the boys play AFL and Football and look forward to catching up with many more activities as the term continues. Next week the Year 12 Drama performances are on in the JAPAC Theatre and I am very excited to see all the boys perform at their best.

I would like to wish Doug Harrison, Will Harpur, Glen Hui and Ethan Wood who form 'Floating Boats' all the best as they participate in the finals of the Battle of the Bands on Tuesday 4 August (Week 3) in the JAPAC Theatre.

The Semester 2 Evening Studies Roster with the Academic Coaches can be viewed here.

Finally, a reminder on Fridays that all boys are required to be at school by 9am; this includes any boy that may have a study period.

Have a great weekend and enjoy your sport.

This will continue from now and into Week 3 of Term 3. The following non-perishable donations may be handed in to me or Mrs Clarke's office: long life milk, cereal, coffee, tea, cans of meat, vegetables, fruit and/or soup, cup of soup, dried fruit. Note: no glass items, please.

Battle of the Bands

On Tuesday 4 August (Week 3) we will see our new JAPAC Theatre fired up as four exciting bands take to the stage to give the new speaker system a real test drive. Please come and support your classmates and enjoy the atmosphere - you will not be disappointed! Don’t be late as we will be kicking off at 12.55pm sharp. Student and staff attendance only.

This year’s finalists are: The Unknown (Year 8), Contagious (Year 10), Scapegoat (Year 11) and Floating Boats (Year 12).
