Leadership
It used to be that leadership equated with years of accomplishment, education, experience, and age. Thankfully, true leadership knows no age. Leaders are people of any age who just ‘stand up’. They grab your attention, take the initiative, are compelling, and set an example.

Unfortunately, today the world is showing signs of hunger for authentic leadership. There is a cynicism with many in authority and a growing anger at the lack of moral fortitude to be found among some leaders. Fortunately, I am filled with optimism as I witness, almost daily, the empathy and resilience of our young men and boys at Knox. Their courage gives me confidence that young people can manifest the best in humanity, and that is a light that will shine for generations to come.

da Vinci Decathlon 2021
The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge students from Years 5-11 across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.

Next week the NSW State competition will be held virtually and the boys below have been chosen to represent Knox in their year level. An average of 1,800 students will be competing each day.

We wish them all the best on the competition day. These students will continue on to represent Knox in the National da Vinci Decathlon to held in June 2021 during the school holidays.

As I sit down to write and reflect on the week that has been, I am reminded of how privileged and lucky we all are to be a part of the Knox community.

This week started with parents back on campus for the Parents' Morning Tea. It was so lovely to see so many parents attend and to also welcome new families to our community. I’d like to thank all of those involved in making it a reality and particularly wanted to thank those that were there. It was wonderful to see you all!

Later that afternoon, the boys embraced the Student Led Conferences where the feedback from the teachers was so complimentary; both on their eagerness to engage and willingness to receive feedback. What was most evident to me was the feedback on the positive relationships the boys were forming with their teachers. As we know, this will be such a vital relationship to the boys over the next six terms. We congratulated the boys on their approach during our Year Meeting on Tuesday and asked them to spend some time ensuring that they were implementing the feedback given by teachers. I know the Senior Academy Team will spend more time writing on this in their section of the newsletter but as always, please feel free to directly contact any of your sons’ teachers if you were unable to speak with them on Monday night. I would like to also thank all of the Year 11 teachers for giving up their time on Monday night to facilitate these conversations.

It was so lovely to see you all on Monday for the Year 11 Parents' Moning Tea. To those I spoke to, thanks for the chat. We had such a great turn out and what a supportive group of families we have.

The Cadets and Pipes and Drums students have been perfecting their duties for Sunday. I am sure it will be a moving service. I look forward to seeing you all on Knox 1. If you are unable to attend the service, it will be live streamed here

The Term 2 Assessment Gantt Chart is on the portal and can be accessed here for ease.

Please note the Seniors' Hall will be closed to Evening Study on Wednesday 5 May. The library will still be open.

We trust the boys and parents have gained some insights and feedback to act upon after the student led Parent/Teacher Conferences last Monday.  Many teachers have commented how impressed they are with how the boys engaged in the interview.  Our hope is that the boys will take the initiative to use this feedback to ensure they can lift their performance further from Term 1. At Year Meeting on Tuesday we spoke to the boys about the importance of feedback and feedforward. The interviews have ensured the boys are aware of their strengths and weaknesses and use this information to map out via a plan the rest of Term 2. We also reinforced to the boys that it is ok to make mistakes as long as they learn from them and strive for their personal best. With the reports being published in Week 6B, they have a number of weeks to work on a range of areas with their teachers.

It has been a fantastic start to the term for the Class of 2022, continuing their great transition into the Senior Academy from Term 1. We have been impressed with both the work ethic and the maturity of the Year 11 cohort and it bodes well to see them enjoying such positive relationships with our young men from Year 12.

Ms Cowell, Mrs Gomez, Mrs McMurrough and I have been working on the Term 2 Mentor Program for some time and it was with a real sense of satisfaction that we launched the Program this week. Through the first six weeks of term, there will be a series of guest speakers, from all walks of life, that will address the cohort. We will then follow these presentations up with debriefs in Mentor time. Additionally, Mrs Gomez is overseeing the boys’ breakdown of their personality traits and assisting Mentors in debriefing each individual on how they can work more effectively with a profound knowledge of those traits.

I hope everyone enjoy a great start to the winter 2021 season playing for Knox. It was a wonderful weekend with so many highlights. The joy on the boys' faces, the spirit, mateship, helping one another in tough times and supporting each other were just a few of the many experiences our boys enjoyed last Saturday.

Last week, one of Australia’s most successful Wallaby captains, John Eales, spoke to our winter sports captains, PEAK students and Firsts teams about the importance of leading with integrity. He shared six pieces of advice for any emerging leader and I would like to share these with everyone.

1. Leadership is all about taking the complex and making it simple and then taking the simple and making it compelling!
• Your job as a leader is to take people on a journey with you – through what you say and what you do.
• You need to take what you are trying to achieve and make it simple for those around you to understand and follow.
• You need to make it compelling enough for those around you to want to get involved.

This week in Year Meeting I spoke briefly with Year 11 about study stress. We have had more referrals for support with managing stress in recent weeks, and this is often the pattern around this time of year in Year 11, when many assessments are due. If your son is feeling the pressure at the moment, he is certainly not alone!

ANZAC Service and Parade

We are pleased to announce that the Knox ANZAC Service and Parade will go ahead on Sunday 2 May 2021 at 8.30am with some modifications and restrictions. All students in the Cadet Unit are expected to attend this event.

Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, we will be limiting spectators to two tickets per Year 11 and 12 Cadets, Pipes and Drums, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Gallery Choir students only. We will continue to monitor government advice and recommendations, and should more tickets become available, we will update parents. We apologise for any disappointment this may cause and thank you for your understanding.

The service and parade will be live streamed here: www.knox.nsw.edu.au/anzac.

If you have any questions, please email events@knox.nsw.edu.au.

Handwriting Course

Each term, Knox holds a Handwriting Course designed to help improve the speed, accuracy and neatness of students’ handwriting, reducing tension and fatigue when writing for long periods of time. In 2021 the classes will be held by Ms Lisa Norton, an occupational therapist, who specialises in the development of skills necessary for handwriting and the remediation of handwriting difficulties.

We have a few places remaining for our Term 2, 2021 course which will begin in Week 3. Our course will run on either a Tuesday or Wednesday or both mornings, starting at 7.30am, once minimum numbers are confirmed.

The Kuringai Special Olympics Fun Run is back - Sunday 30 May
This annual event is where our Knox students from Years 10-12 are buddies to the special Olympians on the Fun Run and Barry Easy Walk. This is a great opportunity for community service and adding to your son’s Certificate of Global Competency. There will be presentations at schools but families can sign up and support this amazing event and ensure children with a disability have the opportunity to participate in sport and stay healthy through the Northern Special Olympics exercise programs.

Volunteers needed for our senior students

As we head towards the end of the year the Learning Enhancement Department is in need of parent volunteers to read and/or write for some of our senior students in the HSC Trials, the HSC and end of year exams.

As a writer, it would be your task to act as an extension of the student by writing as they dictate their response to an examined question. As a reader, it would be your task to read the examined question aloud for clarity. As a reader/writer you would be asked to perform both tasks for the one student.
