Mr Scott James

History will mark Term 2, 2020, as an extraordinary period for all schools in NSW and indeed across Australia. With a constant barrage of bad or worrisome news, we have all needed to call on our sense of optimism.

During this term students have been asked to demonstrate skills to deal with significant challenges, setbacks and changes to normal routine. I am so proud of the way they have exhibited the resilience to successfully navigate these times of uncertainty.

Recent research indicates that young people learn their strength and flexibility from their experiences of success and through their interactions at school. I like to think Knox has provided students with a strong sense of self-confidence because of the opportunities that are available to them. Their ability to cope with the disruptions to normal routine, I believe, can be in part contributed to the School’s focus on extending students beyond their comfort zone.

Furthermore, the support we receive from the community has been vital because it supports the prospect that parents and teachers believe in each other's motives and actions. We accomplish more as a team as we embrace the “village mentality” of leaning on each other to help our students grow and perform at their best, regardless of the challenges that may confront them. Your support is crucial and I thank you for your partnership.

Handwriting Course

Ms Rebecca Papageorgiou

Each term, Knox holds a Handwriting Course designed to help improve the speed, accuracy and neatness of students’ handwriting, reducing tension and fatigue when writing for long periods of time. In 2020 the classes will be held by Ms Lisa Norton, an occupational therapist, who specialises in the development of skills necessary for handwriting and the remediation of handwriting difficulties.

We are now filling places for our Term 3, 2020 course.

Social Justice

Mrs Helen Clarke, Head of Diversity, Justice and Stewardship

Operation Gratitude
Two of the key values of Knox Grammar School are compassion and courage.

We are developing a project to thank COVID-19 front line workers and send letters to those isolated in local Aged Care Facilities.

There will be a series of committees of students from Stage 4 and Stage 5 and Year 11 formed to coordinate Operation Gratitude. This is an opportunity for all students to participate in the Project and develop leadership and organisation skills. Please email Helen Clarke if your son wishes to participate as a leader of one of the leaders of the groups to coordinate this activity.  Boys are then referred to the Social Justice Leaders who will work with the boys on completing this important project. We aim to commence Week 1 of Term 3 and complete this by Week 3.

Food Drive
Traditionally in the winter months, we do a food drive of daily staples for Sydney families who are struggling and living in very challenging conditions. This will continue from now and into Week 3 of Term 3. The following non-perishable donations may be handed in to the SAOs or Mrs Clarke's office: long-life milk, cereal, coffee, tea, cans of meat, vegetables, fruit and/or soup, cup of soup, dried fruit. Note: no glass items, please.

Mrs Sue Floro

And so ends Semester One…and what a semester it has been. Bushfires, a pandemic, social distancing, health screening, remote learning, onsite learning, car lines! We have seen and done so many things over the past 6 months that we’ve never done before, yet as I sit here typing, and glance out the window, I see hundreds of boys playing on the oval and the handball courts – happy, fun-loving boys who have taken it all in their strides and are just enjoying being together.

We hear so much of this ‘new normal’ that we find ourselves in. I prefer to say that we are in an ‘ever-evolving normal’, for just as we get used to one set of routines and conditions, there are adjustments to these, and so it will continue for some time. All families will receive a letter tomorrow, detailing the landscape for Term 3. As I am sure you will understand, however, this landscape may evolve even further over the break. Be assured that we will continue to update you as it does.

Holidays are an important time to reconnect with your family and enjoy the lack of routine. Enjoy the sunshine and cooler days by exploring Sydney together and explore the world through your little boy's eyes.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

What a remarkable semester it has been for our young Kindergarten boys! Not only is it the boys very first year of school in which they have had to deal with learning so many new things and so many firsts, as well as all the emotions of starting school, but they have also had to adapt to the changes with online learning with the many challenges and emotions that were encountered.

Beginning school is such an important step and the boys seamlessly transitioned into Knox school life with much enthusiasm and verve. They were so adept at learning lots of new routines and procedures, showing themselves to be responsible, engaged learners who are curious and open-minded to the many exciting experiences afforded to them at Knox. Just as they were settling into Kindergarten life, they were then faced with changing to online learning. New routines and procedures needed to be learnt and the boys adapted readily, showing the greatest of flexibility and perseverance.

Year 1 News

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

Can you believe that it is Week 9 and the end of Term 2? What an enormous term we have had! It is a term that we will remember for many reasons. The thing that the Year 1 teachers will remember the most is the courage the boys have shown as they faced new challenges and embarked on a learning journey with many twists and turns. Through all of this the boys have remained focused, positive and driven. As teachers, we couldn’t be more proud of our Year 1 boys. We are also very thankful for all the support of our parents during this term. You have continued to trust, support and work with us, we are truly grateful.

Over the holiday period we are encouraging our boys to continue reading. Holidays are the perfect time to sit and enjoy a good book together. We are challenging the boys to read a book a day with someone in their family. What a great opportunity to read together and to read as many books to help your son complete the Premiers Reading Challenge. Remember to be a good reading role model for your son.

Term 2, 2020 was certainly a term like no other! From online learning, to returning face to face amid social distancing, teachers and students alike have had the journey of a lifetime. The Year 2 Teaching Team would like to thank all parents for their continued support, flexibility and patience, in what has been at times a challenging and unique learning environment. It has been so wonderful to have the boys back at school the last few weeks and the Year 2 staff are looking forward to continuing to build upon these foundations once we return to campus.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

We made it! As the final week of Term Two draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Year 3 boys on their hard work and efforts throughout the course of what has been an incredibly busy, yet rewarding term. Despite the unique nature of the past nine weeks, the Year 3 team continues to be most impressed with the manner in which students have embraced the various changes implemented upon their physical return to school, accepting the fact that ‘normal’ routines and procedures now look a little different to earlier in the year.

Year 4 News

Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader

Show courage in your learning and take risks
Throughout the course of your son’s education, he will encounter similar themes and topics that will be approached with increasing complexity relative to his growing ability and purpose of the task. A perfect example is writing. Each year he will be exposed to informational, persuasive and imaginative writing; however, the stylistic features such as the language of each text does change and develop as his understanding of each type of text does.

This term we have been experimenting with narrative writing. The boys have really taken this in their stride and the Year 4 team is excited by a lot of their writing. We want to motivate the boys to always show courage in their learning; it’s easy to revert back to what feels comfortable and familiar, but it takes courage to try something new. We look forward to continuing their imaginative writing as Mr Larkin joins us for Semester Two.

We are well into our current Knoxigations unit of inquiry. Our big idea is GOLD CHANGED AUSTRALIA. We are looking at different perspectives from life on the goldfields as well as exploring the impact ‘GOLD FEVER’ had on migration and how it may have been the first step towards a democratic government that we have today. We explore the concept of identity and what factors influence our own identity.
