Mr Scott James

Remember The Golden Rule?

'Treat others as you would want to be treated.'

We live in a world where there are many differences between people, but with an open mind and appreciation of each person’s contributions to this world, we strengthen our relationships and our School community. Thus, my consistent message to students is that everyone should make it a habit to look for the unique talents of each person we meet and be respectful of their differences.

In my mind, treating people with respect should simply be part of the fabric of society. To feel respected could be considered a basic human right. Current world events, in particular what has been happening in the US, highlights what can happen when society fails to recognise that individual differences exist and to understand that as members of a society we are equal.

Handwriting Course

Ms Rebecca Papageorgiou

Each term, Knox holds a Handwriting Course designed to help improve the speed, accuracy and neatness of students’ handwriting, reducing tension and fatigue when writing for long periods of time. In 2020 the classes will be held by Ms Lisa Norton, an occupational therapist, who specialises in the development of skills necessary for handwriting and the remediation of handwriting difficulties.

We are now filling places for our Term 3, 2020 course.

How much is too much when it comes to screen time?
As Psychologists we often get asked about how much screen time is appropriate for young people. In many ways, focusing on the question of ‘how much?’ is less vital than ensuring that screen time does not replace or supersede other important areas of emotional, social and physical development. Among other things, it is important that screen time does not interfere with the need for students to have quality sleep, regular exercise, and opportunities for face-to-face interaction.

The question regarding screen time use often comes from the concern that screen time, in and of itself, is a ‘bad’ thing and should be limited – however it is important to acknowledge that digital technology is a part of modern life and brings many benefits – including opportunities for learning and socialising.

Refugee Week
This week is Refugee Week. Australia is a multi-cultural nation which has been long enriched by migrants from many lands. Let’s not forget the refugees who flee from lands where poverty, war and violence makes them hope for a new life in a land they can live with dignity and safety. Read some of their inspiring stories here.

Food Drive
Traditionally in the winter months, we do a food drive of daily staples for Sydney families who are struggling and living in very challenging conditions. This will continue from now and into Week 3 of Term 3. The following non-perishable donations may be handed in to the SAOs or Mrs Clarke's office: long life milk, cereal, coffee, tea, cans of meat, vegetables, fruit and/or soup, cup of soup, dried fruit. Note: no glass items, please.

Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher interviews will take place via Zoom, beginning in Week 3 of Term 3. Whilst we are unsure as to what the rules of gathering and distancing will be by this time, we will not risk having so many adults on campus, in one venue at the same time. Further information will be sent before the end of term, with regard to the process for booking times with your son’s classroom teacher, as well as the teacher he has for Mathematics and English.

Laura Literary Awards
Each year, we enter the Laura Literary Awards, a national competition for writers from around Australia, with several categories. We always do well in this competition; however, this year our results are exceptional! Congratulations to the following boys for their outstanding entries, in each of these sections. As you read down the list of awardees, you will notice that some boys entered multiple sections, and some were awarded multiple prizes each section.

Notification of Student Absences Due to Illness
Pleasingly, positive cases of COVID-19 are very low in NSW at present and there have been very few instances of community transmission in the last two weeks. Nonetheless, if your son develops flu-like symptoms you should follow the advice of NSW Health and have him tested. If this is the case, please notify your son’s Classroom Teacher and the Health Clinic. Documentation of a negative result must be provided to the School before your son comes back and he should not return until all symptoms have cleared. In the unlikely event that your son receives a positive result, please call reception immediately.

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

Kindergarten began their social skills program earlier in the term. It has been an engaging program purposefully designed to teach children social skills using puppets and is run by the School psychologists Frieda Stemp and Hayley Wilton each week.

Another busy and productive week was had by all in Year 1. The boys are thoroughly enjoying delving into our Sustainable Solutions Knoxigations Unit. As part of unpacking our Big Idea 'Materials Are For Making' the boys have been observing, making predictions and coming up with some great wonderings about a variety of materials in our environment.

Year 2 News

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

Year 2 are now entering the ‘Finding Out’ phase of the inquiry learning cycle within our Sustainable Solutions Knoxigations Unit. Over the next two weeks, boys will continue developing their knowledge of key concepts associated with sustainability including the four Rs; rethink, reduce, reuse, recycle, and the idea of ‘everything comes from something’ (e.g. paper from trees, plastic toys from oil). It would be fabulous if you could discuss the recycling strategies that your family completes at home each week as this knowledge can be easily transferred to their learning experiences in the classroom.

Student Groupings
Our student groupings for Mathematics and Reading are flexible. This means that we regularly review student placements based on their performance in class and in assessments such as MAP Growth. Our groups are flexible so that we can ensure our boys are appropriately placed in a group that targets teaching to their next steps of learning. Sometimes, boys perform very well and other times they have a bad day. This is normal. As a team, we sit down and we look at patterns of achievement and consistent growth before moving students. At school, we avoid comparing students or using language such as ‘move up’ or ‘move down’ – we always encourage a celebration of growth and effort.

We have spent some time over the past week talking with your son and setting goals for the next eight weeks of learning. A full report of your son's most recent MAP results will be sent in Week 1 of next term as well as content he will focus on in the weeks ahead.

Year 5 News

My Place writing competition
As a reflection activity, all Year 5 students considered how the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted their life. In some ways, the chance to stop in isolation gave a chance to realise what is important to us and how we want to connect with others. We really enjoyed reading the boys' writing. Many of the writing samples exceeded our expectations. We are currently discussing the best way to preserve these 'primary historical sources' of a specific moment in time which can be appreciated for many years to come. I am pleased to note the number of boys that have requested that their writing be entered into the My Place competition. It is fantastic to see so many boys having a go and sharing their writing. I wanted to share three pieces with you. These are distinctly different – demonstrating that this time impacted us all in our own personal way.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The Year 6 boys have had another wonderful week of learning as they commenced their Unit of Inquiry, 'Stories of the World and its People'. This unit has a focus on civil rights from around the world, with boys researching notable figures from around the world who had major influences on the civil rights of the people of their country. This is quite an interesting subject for the boys to study as it is very topical with the events currently taking place around the globe. This is a captivating unit for the boys and they have already displayed an incredible knowledge of famous historical activists.

Mr Martin Haywood

It was with great excitement that our Headmaster announced to the boys on Friday afternoon confirmation that a Winter CAS season will go ahead in Term 3. The reaction of the boys said it all – they cannot wait to get involved. For so many Year 12s they will have one last experience wearing the Black and Blue and for many Year 7s boys it will be their very first chance to play a winter sport for Knox.

Some of the finer details will be shared this week as we wait for guidance from the government as well as confirmation of a holiday training and trial schedule as we best prepare the boys – many of whom will be playing contact sports.
