Mr Scott James

As I write my final newsletter for 2020, I do not want to dwell too much upon the unprecedented challenges of the year. In fact, when I reflect on 2020 I do so with a sense of pride and recognise it as a point in our school history when the spirit of our community burned with a radiant brightness that transcended all adversity.

I want to express my admiration for the courage and resilience that all members of this community demonstrated this year. As we begin to emerge from the other side of this crisis, we do so in the sure knowledge that those bonds which have been forged in adversity have only served to enrich and intensify our relationships with one and other. We have inspired each other to live with hope and face the future in the sure knowledge that we will emerge from this in a stronger position than ever before. We have not simply survived; we have grown together and thrived together during these most testing of times.

Despite the challenges our young people faced in 2020, I continued to witness our students doing amazing things. Our boys care for each other so much more than my generation did when I was young. They are so much more attuned to the environment and the world. They have a real desire to connect with other people. They are vocal, they are motivated, and they are driven to succeed. I genuinely believe our young people have the opportunity to be one of our greatest generations.

Careers News

Mrs Linda Gomez, Director of Career Education and Development

This year has seen the introduction of industry specific online career events held in conjunction with the OKGA. A monthly event where our Alumni network share their knowledge, experience and personal insights into their study, career and professional industries. Despite the new online forum, the ongoing connectivity between the School and Old Boy network has continued to inspire current students to take ownership of their own education and career development and to provide valuable opportunities and resources for students to explore and develop their career interests.

Dhruv Hariharan selected for the NSW Debating Team
Congratulations to Dhruv Hariharan, who has been selected to debate in the NSW Debating Team. Dhruv has had a remarkable year of debating, representing Knox in the CAS Firsts team and successfully winning the division (tied with Barker College and St Aloysius' College). In 2019, Dhruv was the youngest member of the NSW Debating squad, which comprises the top 12 debaters in the state. He was selected to the squad again this year along with Samuel Druce and Will Choi. From this squad, Dhruv has been selected for the NSW Schools Debating team, which is the top 6 of the 12 debaters selected for the squad.

We wish all in the Knox community a happy and restful Christmas and New Year. The boys in the Social Justice program have exemplary and are to be congratulated for their commitment.

November is MOvember month

Mrs Sue Floro

It is somewhat surreal to be typing this last Knoxonian article for 2020. It has quite literally flown by, despite (or perhaps because of) all of the challenges that we have all found ways to conquer throughout the entire year.

To say that we are excited that parents of boys in Years 3 to 6 are able to attend our Presentation Day event next Wednesday evening is such an understatement. As you will understand, it has been a mammoth effort to jump through all of the COVID-19 safe hoops that sat between the beginnings of an idea and its execution, but every piece of paperwork is worth the effort! On Monday next week, all families will receive a detailed set of instructions that we ask you to graciously follow, to ensure that we satisfy all of the requirements of our COVID-19 safe plans. I am absolutely sure that you will happily follow all instructions if it means being allowed on-site to watch the spectacle that is Presentation Day unfold. It is an event not to be missed!

The strength of a nation derives from the integrity of the home.

In the Kindergarten Assembly last week, I spoke to the boys about being super heroes and using their Knox Values as super powers to help them be the best person that they can be.

The value of integrity can be tricky. Having integrity doesn't mean your son will always be honest, responsible, or respectful. What it does mean is that he will learn to understand the consequence of his actions on himself and on others. It will encourage him to make informed choices about how his life impacts the world and people around him.

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

As we near the end of the school year, the Kindergarten team would like to thank the parents for your unwavering support throughout this year.

Your son’s first year of school, his first year at Knox, has proved monumental in so many ways. As Knox greeted the 2021 students last week at Orientation, it was difficult for us to recall our boys from this year being at that stage. Your sons have grown so much this year: physically, socially and academically. We feel privileged to be a part of it.

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

Who can believe we are at the end of the year, and what a year it has been! A year of surprises and, at times, the unknown. Throughout the year the boys have consistently demonstrated the Knox Values, especially integrity and courage. This was particularly evident when school as we knew it, was suddenly flipped around and we were all learning from home ... and then back on-site face to face with our ‘new normal.’

The boys have been excitedly rehearsing for the ‘Jerusalema Challenge’ taking place this week. A wonderful opportunity for boys to participate in sharing the message of hope, joy and unity through dance. Students have also been preparing an educational resource with the purpose of sharing the gift of learning with a school from around the world. The empathy displayed by the boys throughout our Global Changemakers Knoxigations unit has been uplifting to see.

Mrs Tina Ruddock, Year 3 Team Leader

Week 7 marks the penultimate week of school for your son in 2020. All students are continuing to work hard in class as the various units of work taught this term steadily draw to a close. Next week, boys will gradually bring home their books in order to alleviate the pressure on their growing backs. Some of the work the boys have completed this year has been done on the School iPads which unfortunately cannot be brought home. Having said that, this work may be saved to your son’s Google Drive account which can be accessed from home and teachers will be encouraging students to save any work to their account to keep for the future. In addition, work samples and some assessments are accessible through your son’s Seesaw account.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The final full week of Year 6 is upon us with the boys preparing for Presentation Day and Farewell Assemblies in Week 8. We have been incredibly proud of the way the boys have handled this year, with a Global Pandemic meaning they missed many of the activities and events that they would normally partake in throughout Year 6. On behalf of all of the Year 6 Staff we would like to acknowledge the outstanding contributions the boys have made to the School throughout their time at the Prep. The boys have always kept high expectations of themselves and the way in which they have been leaders to younger members of the School community has been a sight to behold. We are looking forward to celebrating with the boys over the coming week as their time in the Prep comes to an end.

2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all boys who have participated in the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge. This year, we had 99.7% of students complete the challenge. A mammoth effort and a Prep first. Well done! Participation certificates will be distributed during Library and Literacy Centre lessons during the week.

A special mention to those boys who will receive a Gold or Platinum certificate. To be eligible for a Gold certificate, students must complete four challenges (not necessarily consecutive). To be eligible for a Platinum certificate, students must complete seven challenges. This is an amazing effort. Congratulations! Gold and Platinum Certificates are posted separately and will be distributed to those students once they have been received.

AMEB results update
A huge congratulations to all of the boys who sat their AMEB music exams over the last few weeks and good luck to the boys sitting their Rockschool exams this Saturday. Just a reminder that these exams will be in the Senior School Rock Lab in the JAPAC building. An exciting announcement for one of our very talented young musicians. Benas Lu was awarded an A which is a Distinction in his 8th Grade Piano exam. This is the highest grade AMEB exam any student has ever sat in the Prep School, and to be awarded a Distinction is truly a remarkable result! Benas was also awarded another A in his 4th Grade French Horn exam and an A+ which is a High Distinction in his 3rd Grade Theory exam. Well done, Benas!

Mr Martin Haywood

For majority of boys, last Saturday brought an end to Saturday sport and CAS and IPSHA summer competition. It has been quite a year and the resilience our boys and staff have shown has been nothing short of incredible. For a period of time, it looked like there would be no winter sport, and for a while it looked like we would have no support from our Tartan Army - yet everyone stayed positive and focused, understanding and flexible, incredibly resilient and courageous. Thanks to everyone including parents for your patience. In the end, one of the most satisfying years on record within the Sports Department. Well done everyone and I hope you all have a well deserved, safe holiday.

Last Friday, Knox hosted Cranbrook School for one of our first and only evening events for the year and it was a huge success. To remain COVID-19 safe, we were restricted with supporters but the atmosphere was still enough to give our boys a memorable evening. How many times have our Volleyball squads played in front of 100 fans? They loved it and thrived on the occasion. These memories will last with these boys for a long time.
