Year 12 Showcases
It’s hard to believe but there are just a few weeks left for our Year 12 boys before they graduate and knuckle down for their final weeks of study before the HSC. The boys have now completed their HSC Trial Examinations, with many of the boys’ major projects now complete and the rest due in the next few weeks.

While this year’s Year 12 Showcase event was unable to be held on-campus due to COVID-19, we are developing a series of videos for each of the Year 12 subjects which have a major project component. You can watch the latest videos here. Over the coming weeks we will also share videos about the boys’ work in Visual Arts, Music, Drama, TAS and Extension English.

We wish the boys all the best for the next few weeks and look forward to our celebrations in Weeks 9 and 10.

This Friday is Jersey Day
Each year we wear jerseys to promote Jersey Day by enabling our boys to wear their favourite sports jerseys at school on that day. The boys will wear the jersey over their school shirt.

Jersey Day is in support of the Donate Life network, to encourage conversation with friends and families about Organ Donation. This is a positive way we can support this important day and increase awareness of organ donation as a most precious gift of life. More details will be given to the boys via their mentors.

Mrs Sue Floro

It can be easy, particularly this year, to focus on what’s unsettling, unusual, uncomfortable and uncertain … so many ‘uns’; but when we open our minds to the good things that are happening all around us, the impact that the ‘uns’ have on our psyche, our outlook and even our mindset, diminishes significantly. I was reminded of this, this week, a number of times.

In a conversation with one of our school leaders, the discussion started with an acknowledgement of all of the things that had not gone to plan - the events that had been missed, the experiences forfeited. There exists a sense of urgency amongst our Year 6 cohort, to leave a mark, to make a difference, which is just so heartening. It is a concrete acknowledgement of the work we’ve done over the past three years, to ensure that our boys understand their ability to be an agent of change in our world. Bravo Year 6 – we are looking forward to sharing your initiatives with the Prep community over the coming weeks.

Be mindful. Be grateful. Be positive. Be true. Be kind. Roy T. Bennett

Father’s Day is a wonderful time to reflect on our family and be grateful for the dads, uncles and special men in our sons' lives. Practising gratitude is a huge component of having a positive attitude and talking about gratitude is also a great gift to give children. Simply encouraging them to look on the bright side gives boys a new view and encourages them to find a reason to be grateful for something each day.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

Last week I was lucky enough to see some magical musical performances by the Kindergarten classes with Mrs Irwin. The boys were playing percussion instruments to 'Dance of the Swans' by Tchaikovsky. Not only were the boys listening intently to the rhythm and beat but they were also showing great discipline, social skills and teamwork as they waited for their part to play.

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

Congratulations Year 1! All of our boys have successfully completed the Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC). We are very proud of all the boys for persisting with the PRC and working as a team to complete the challenge. Now that we have completed the PRC it is so important to keep the reading momentum going. We encourage all our boys to continue reading every day, not just Home Readers but a wide variety of texts. Remember, as adults it is so important for us to be good reading role models for the boys. Model good reading behaviours by making the time each afternoon or evening to sit and enjoy a book together. On the weekends find a nice quiet spot outside in the beautiful Spring weather and read a family favourite. We would love to see some photos of how our Year 1 families are enjoying reading together at home.

Another wonderful week in Year 2 with all teachers wishing to express how proud we are of the hard work the boys have been putting into their Knoxigations unit learning about the relationship between energy, forces and products. Students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring heat, light and sound this week through BrainPOP videos, Generation Genius interactive quizzes and some good old fashioned Bingo! It has been clear just how much the boys are enjoying exploring Science and Technology throughout this unit. Please read below some student quotes regarding their learning.

The Boy who Harnessed the Wind
This term, the boys have been studying the text ‘The Boy who Harnessed the Wind’ by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. As part of their study, they considered the various problems encountered by William, his family, village and country. These included: limited access to electricity, deforestation, flooding, drought, famine and limited access to education. Over the past week, the boys have been busy designing a solution (in the form of a tool/system) to one of these problems, considering impacts to the environment as well as access to materials. We have been impressed by the careful thought and consideration that has gone into many of the designs.

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

As we continue to live in a COVID-19 world, we always have the boys' interest at heart and ensuring they are safe and healthy is an important part of this. Whilst not currently mandated, we do recommend, where possible, that the boys wear a mask to and from school whilst travelling via public transport. Whilst at this point in time the wearing of masks is not mandatory on public transport, we do feel the extra precaution may be worthwhile. There are now Knox face masks available at the Uniform Shop, if required.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

Another great week for the boys of Year 6 has passed as we move into the second half of Term 3. As we progress throughout the year, we remain focused on ensuring the boys are living up to the high expectations which they have set for themselves. We have had a number of issues with boys acting inappropriately on trains or at the station on the way home. We ask that you remind your son that they need to ensure they showcase their excellent behaviour, especially when in the public eye. We have also had boys wearing the wrong uniform or not having items such as boaters or black shoes. Please ensure that your son has all the appropriate items of clothing required and is dressed appropriately on the way to school each day. If there is a diagnosed medical condition requiring your son to wear alternative uniform items, such as shoes, a medical certificate is required.

Our Prep School ‘20-1’ Recycling Program has now passed its fifth week and the boys at the Prep have been working hard at separating their waste into the six different bins; red for general waste, green for organic waste, yellow for paper, blue for ‘return and earn’ bottles, black for soft plastics and white for hard plastics and other mixed recyclables. So far, we have:

• stopped 240 bags of rubbish going to landfill.
• sent 25 large bags of soft plastic to recycling.
• made $99 through return and earn.

We would love to hear how you are going with your recycling at home.

Mr Martin Haywood

Week 1 of the Knox Track and Field season was a huge success with over 100 boys participating in a number of activities on a beautiful sunny day at Gillespie. Some staff also had a run and tried to keep up with a few of the boys to ensure plenty of fun and, importantly, a healthy start to the weekend. Thanks for those that attended and we look forward to more record numbers this weekend - and some more variations and additions to our tough 'iron-man course' that many found extremely challenging. A number of 'chookas vouchers' were won with many more again this week up for grabs.
