Headmaster's Column
Mr Scott James
Coronavirus
I would sincerely like to thank all parents for their on-going support as we respond to the unprecedented situation regarding this virus.
While many of the measures which have been introduced by the School many have been disruptive for families, the welfare and wellbeing of our students is, as always, our primary concern.
As we have seen over the last week, several Sydney schools have been forced to close due to cases of Coronavirus.
The School has been preparing a continuity plan for the chance that we may need to close due to Coronavirus. I have written to all parents directly (by email) to provide an update on our preparations and how they relate to each of our campuses.
I am very appreciative of your calm, encouraging response to all measures that have been put in place so far.
Speaking to your son about Coronavirus
I’m conscious that the media coverage, social media and the increased hygiene practices many have increased anxiety for some boys. Parents have an important role in modelling behaviour for their child. When speaking to your child about Coronavirus, remain calm, stick to the facts and reassure them that you’ll look after them at this time. As always, our Counsellors and Wellbeing Staff are available to meet with students and families who require additional support. If you require assistance, please contact Knox Prep – Mr Peter Voysey (9472 9372), Wahroonga Prep – Mrs Tanya Lorimer (9489 3921) or Senior School – Psychologists’ Reception (9119 0828).

Knox singers share some of their Male Voice Power at the Children’s Hospital in Westmead.
If music be the food of life, sing on!
A slight misquote, but a timely one. On any given day we have hundreds of children in the care of dedicated and caring health professionals throughout the country. One of those institutions is the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. In that hospital, as in so many others, Music Therapy is playing a massive role in accelerating healing, and reducing pain for these children.
Battle of the Bands
The 2020 Battle of the Bands Heats was quite possibly the best yet!
This is always an exciting and entertaining event that showcases many of Knox’s Contemporary Rock Bands. Staged on the steps of the Great Hall during lunchtime on Monday, Tuesday and Friday of Week 6, there were 57 students across 13 bands participating this year. All of the participating boys have been busy honing their skills week to week in the JAPAC Rocklab as part of the Contemporary Music Studies Programme.
This year we had a strong representation across years 8-12, with the younger year groups proving to be very strong. The older groups were also in fine form, flaunting their experience with a great demonstration of stage presence and command of their instruments.
Oratory
Miss Leah Mercier, Oratory Coordinator
Our oratory students are getting into the swing of things as we move into Week 7 of term – read on for more detail!
In the Knox Debating Cup, Round 4 saw our teams start to settle into the competition. Congratulations to ‘Taipans’ who are the current undefeated leaders of the competition on 4 wins, trailing just behind Team ‘Kidston, Johnstone, Wines and Zhou’ on individual speaker scores. Awesome work boys! 17 teams have been successful in participating most weeks of the competition so far, which is fantastic. If you are not yet in a KDC team, but are interested in participating, please don’t hesitate to send me an email. KDC will be taking a break in week 7, with no debates being held, but will be back in Week 8 for teams to continue debating the mind-expanding motions we have in store.
Training is continuing as usual, with boys continuing to take the opportunity to learn from our expert coaches. As always, the full list of training times and locations can be found on the Knox Debating Board

Prep School News
From the Head of the Preparatory School
Mrs Sue Floro
We are certainly living in interesting times! You have received communications about how we will operate, should the school be closed at some point in the future, and the teachers are currently working to replicate, as closely as possible, the normal day to day operations of the school for the boys, should that happen. Until that time, however, we are operating on a business as usual basis and we are following the advice of both the Association of Independent Schools (NSW), and NSW Health.
There is, of course, significant media attention on COVID-19, and we are all discussing it throughout the course of each day, both at work and in our homes. This is leading to heightened anxiety and fear, which impacts our boys, your sons. Can I ask you to consider carefully the words you use at home to describe this virus and its potential impact? Our boys are incredibly intuitive and they not only hear our words, but sense our emotions. They don’t always talk to you about how they’re feeling, but we are seeing a heightened level of anxiety about it at school. I am seeking your assistance, to help to calm the boys by giving them accurate information, and opening the conversation at home by giving them the opportunity to tell you what they have heard or read, so that you can correct any misunderstandings they have. It is also particularly important to talk about how they can take responsibility for their health by washing their hands well etc. This is an opportunity for us to work together to help the boys to remain alert but not alarmed.

The greatness of a man is not how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively. Bob Marley
Last week in assembly we introduced Riley to the boys. Our K-2 Knox Bear is a mark of kindness and integrity. Riley is named after one of the youngest boys to start at Knox in the founding class of 1924. John Maclean Riley was a 10 year old boy who started in Yr 3 and boarded in Ewan House. During his 6 years at Knox, he was an active member of the school community, participating in a variety of sports, debating teams and cadets. His kindness and integrity are role models for our young boys to aspire to. During Assembly, Riley Bear will reward boys who are engaged in the class presentation, demonstrating respect by listening attentively and participating enthusiastically. Congratulations to 2C who were the first class to receive Riley for a week.
Kindergarten News
Mrs Mary-Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader
There were 71 very excited Kindergarten boys on Monday as we were lucky enough to have the Fire and Rescue Team visit. This was part of the provocation for our upcoming Knoxigations unit ‘People work together in communities’.
Kindergarten boys were divided into two groups. One group listened to Fireman Brent and Firewoman Jen talk about what fire fighters do. We learnt that they help us by putting out fires as well as rescue people. We also learnt they rescue lots of animals too!

All genuine learning comes from experience John Dewey
Year 1 have had the pleasure of learning about celebrations and why every celebration is like a recipe. It is made up of traditions.
After exploring a variety of celebrations, the boys began developing their own celebration. Some of the celebrations created have been Kindness Day, Superhero Day and Gumboot Day. All of these are unique to the student, however, they do have consistent traditions such as food, music, activities, clothing, decorations, symbols and people. One of the celebrations was tested after rain last week. The boys jumped in puddles and celebrated play, fun, rain and nature.
Year 2 News
Mrs Alicia Baldry, Year 2 Team Leader
In Knoxigations this week the boys are starting to plan their design for a Knox classroom of the future. Over the last few weeks, the boys have looked at schools around the world and how technology at school and in the home has progressed. The boys will need to consider the objects and technology that we use now, and what we might replace these with in the future. How we could use it sustainably and how it could be improved for the future. Their design will be added to a virtual time capsule for students of the future to open in 20 years that will be presented on Cospaces. The teachers are really excited to see the students designs!
Year 3 News
Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader
Yesterday, the Year 3 students attended both the Anzac Memorial and NSW State Library as part of their Commemorations Excursion tied to our current Knoxigations unit. Throughout the day the boys were given the opportunity to conduct an historical inquiry through the stories and lives of our Anzacs. The boys learnt more about the places our Anzacs came from, where they went overseas and they also took part in a unique ceremony of commemoration. The excursion proved to be a wonderful learning opportunity for all students who thoroughly enjoyed the various activities, whilst also deepening their own knowledge and understanding of key concepts related to our Big Idea, ‘Commemorating significant events connects us to our past'.
Year 5 News
Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader
Knoxigations
The Year 5 boys are well into the final stages of preparation where they are getting ready to pitch their ideas in a ‘shark tank’ style at the end of this week. They were given two guiding principles; Inclusion and Sustainability to relate to and were asked to modify or design an innovation which will be considered in our future city design. We have emphasised that is it not the final product but more their justification in their idea and how it is related to inclusivity or sustainability that is important. Th marking rubric for the task has been placed on the Year 5 page of the Knox portal. All boys will present to their class and some will then be selected to present to the rest of the cohort.
Year 6 News
Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader
Another busy week has come and gone in Year 6 with the boys completing some excellent work and again showing great enthusiasm in their role as leaders of the School. Over the past couple of weeks, the boys have begun their portfolio jobs for 2020. Part of this responsibility is meeting with the teacher in charge of their portfolio and coming up with new and innovative ways in which their chosen portfolio could make a difference in school life at Knox. I encourage you to discuss this with your son and think about some ways in which they could assist in their role, and some new ideas they could develop as a part of this.

Sports News
From the Head of Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy
Mr Martin Haywood
Last Saturday the Summer 2019/20 season concluded for boys in the Senior School with many wonderful performances and CAS premierships to be proud of, whilst our Prep boys have one more sunny Saturday to enjoy time with their mates wearing the Black & Blue.
The character on display right throughout the Summer has been consistent across all codes including, but not limited to courage, tenacity, spirit, sportsmanship and skill. An effective combination when mixed in with support from many senior students around the various venues.
Congratulations to our Waterpolo Firsts who won for the first time ever the CAS competition and were also crowned joint CAS/GPS champions with Newington College. Friday night in the Knox pool our Firsts played the best game of their life and defeated Trinity Grammar in front of many screaming fans whilst our Seconds were brave but beaten by a strong Trinity side.
Knox was also crowned CAS Premiers in the Firsts Basketball and Tennis on Saturday with big wins against Barker and we are also very proud of our Chess team winning the CAS competition. A huge Summer, and our Coaching staff must be recognised for their commitment and support of the boys, giving them every opportunity to have fun and allow the boys to achieve their very best.
Text for the Week
