Headmaster's Column
Mr Scott James
At times 2020 has been a year that has been difficult to see the glass as half full. Yet, as I reflect on the year, the Knox community has definitely faced adversity and demonstrated optimism and resilience.
In the midst of the pandemic, there is still a lot of “good” that has happened at Knox. I certainly do not mean to minimise the harsh reality of an incredibly difficult year.
Unquestionably, the pandemic has been a challenging time, but I have been so heartened by the positive community spirit that has still managed to shine through this year. I recognise that every child is the product of a set of experiences and that the people involved in shaping those experiences, both at home and at school, have a huge amount of responsibility. We do this so well together, the School and parents working cooperatively.
2020 has shown once again that our School is a unique and vital community with relationships woven together through meaningful connections - between students, students and teachers and teachers and families.

Fees In Advance Program
For many years the School has offered a ‘fees in advance’ program to enable increased flexibility of such payments. The program is attractive for many reasons, enabling parents to make lump sum payments for years ahead which attract discounts to the scheduled fees. To qualify, upfront full year payments must be made for a minimum of one year and the payments must be made by 13 November in the year before your payment program begins. Payments will only be accepted by direct funds transfer or cheque (credit card or BPAY payments are not permitted for this program).
Details of the Fees in Advance Program can be found here on the Knox website. Alternatively, you might like to discuss this in confidence with Betty Fowler from the School’s Accounts Department on 9487 0442.
The Martin, Barbara, Berend, and Matthew Hollander Indigenous Scholarship
The Hollander family, with Knox Grammar School, is proud to announce the Martin, Barbara, Berend, and Matthew Hollander Indigenous Scholarship.
Established in memory of the Hollander family, tragically killed whilst on holiday in New Zealand as a result of the White Island volcano eruption of 9 December 2019, the scholarship, working with Knox Grammar School and the (Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin) GO Foundation, will help provide the opportunity for local indigenous students to attend Knox Grammar School.
Prep School News
From the Head of the Preparatory School
Mrs Sue Floro
This really is the year of firsts in so many respects, and last week’s Remembrance Day Service was viewed virtually by our boys and staff for the first time at Prep. A beautiful service, made even more powerful by Prep trumpeters Guy Wood, Charlie Elsik and Harrison Cleary, who played the Last Post and Reveille. Such hauntingly beautiful and then rousing tunes that added to the solemnity of the service.
I am so thrilled to report that the Lapathon, run by our Social Justice Leaders, resulted in 15 387 laps of the ovals being run, and raising $12 461.85, at last count. This was an outstanding initiative by our Year 6 Leaders, and was so well received by all of our boys. Congratulations boys! The Headspace Charity will be so grateful for your hard work and mammoth jogging efforts!

I read this in the Knoxonian last week and thought it related beautifully to our K-2 community.
With only a few weeks of the school year left, many of us are thinking about and planning for the holidays. For our boys, the school holidays present wonderful opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation, quality time with the family and important social time with friends. It’s a wonderful opportunity to develop independence, resilience and communication skills. Start by putting down your phone and laughing together.

Year 1 News
Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader
Year 1 have had another great week of fun and learning and have really enjoyed investigating how we hear sounds. We discovered how sound travels in waves and these waves travel through the air into our ears and the message is then sent to our brains. The boys came up with some wonderful questions and wonderings especially around what happens when a person is hearing impaired. This week we are looking forward to some hands-on experiments to investigate the sounds we hear. We can’t wait to share our findings with you.
Year 2 News
Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader
The value of education and equality for all continues to be a focus in our Knoxigations unit. It is heart-warming to see the boys display such empathy and compassion for children around the world who are not as fortunate as they are. Year 2 read the picture book ‘Malala’s Magic Pencil’ and used this text as inspiration to create their own magic pencil that could change the world. Some of the elements that boys wished to change include:
• "I would change the laws that stop girls from going to school in some countries."
• "My magic pencil would make sure that all boys and girls can go to school around the world."
• "To stop the inequality of education around the world I would build a school in every village."
• "I would make sure all villages have access to electricity, clean water to drink and toilets."
• "I would give every child a pencil case with pencils, a book and an eraser."
Year 3 News
Mrs Tina Ruddock, Year 3 Team Leader
Last week in Year 3, the students explored the theme of NAIDOC Week, ‘Always was, always will be’. This theme fits in beautifully with our big idea for our Knoxigations unit ’Significant sites should be preserved and protected’. The class discussions were meaningful and far-ranging. The students learned of significant Aboriginal sites in bushland around Knox Prep. Kuringai Chase National Park is one such place that holds hundreds of significant sites and artefacts. This Park contains the largest collection of aboriginal art in the Sydney region. Over 200 groups of engravings are recorded. The boys demonstrated high levels of empathy as they learned about the Stolen Generations and read and discussed the picture book, 'Stories for Simon' by Lisa Miranda Sarzin and illustrated by Lauren Briggs. They wrote their own ’sorry stories’ and created a mural which is now displayed outside the Year 3 classrooms.

Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader
Australian Changemakers
As part of our Knoxigations inquiry, the boys have been using library lessons to develop their research skills, collecting information on an Australian Changemaker from a variety of sources. Their understanding of Australian innovators such as Victor Chang, Fiona Wood, John Flynn and Graeme Clark is continuing to develop and it has been rewarding to see them applying their understanding to new contexts, articulating character strengths needed and appreciating the trials and tribulations experienced when starting small, but thinking big.
Year 5 News
Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader
We started our week this week with our House Captain Speeches. The Year 5 boys who self-nominated for this role gathered in the auditorium at 12pm and were given the topic: How will you know at the end of 2021 that you have been an effective House Leader? What will success look like to you? The speeches were written on the day so that no one student was given any advantage of a prepared speech. We were thrilled with the number of students who had a go and put themselves forward. We are coming to the end of our Year 5 Aspiring Leadership Course and the boys have gained a much greater understanding of servant leadership and what it means to be a successful leader in the Prep School. As Year 6 boys next year, they will naturally lead and place an impact on the culture of our school. We continue to look at leadership through the lens of our school values. It is easy to do the right thing when someone is watching but what are their peers like when there are no adults around? We have been very pleased with the questions they ask and their openness in sharing their ideas. This concludes our Student Leadership selection process for 2021 Leaders. All positions will be announced on Presentation Day.
Year 6 News
Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader
The boys have another excellent week of learning as we head into the final weeks of their schooling lives at the Prep. The boys had an excellent day at their Orientation Day on Friday getting the opportunity to spend time at Senior School and to hear from some of the boys who have made the transition previously. It was wonderful to see the energy and enthusiasm the boys showed throughout the day, particularly when having their tour around the campus and the JAPAC facility. We have no doubt that the boys will have a smooth transition to the Senior School and this day provided them with a great opportunity to get to know their surroundings.

Why Learn an Instrument? - The Cognitive Effects of Music in our Children
Over the years there have been many studies done on the effects of music and how it affects the learning processes in young children. We all like to pump up the tunes when driving in the car or when doing that workout at the gym, however, studies have shown that music definitely has a special power when it comes to training brain development and cognitive skills in young children. Studies have shown that in young people, music has a vital role in not only their mental growth but also their physical growth. Music has been proven to affect and improve fine motor skills, memory skills, auditory processing abilities, balance the brain’s electrical activity and balance emotions. Learning an instrument and being in the Prep School Instrumental Program is not only a lot of fun but involves teamwork, dedication to a chosen instrument and is very beneficial to your son’s social and auditory skills. So why not sign up your son for a musical instrument next year!!
Code Camp
These school holidays, Knox will be hosting Code Camp, the holiday program where kids design, code, problem solve and become storytellers and creators of technology, by creating games, websites, and videos in just three days!
Sports News
From the Head of Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy
Mr Martin Haywood
Congratulations to all boys on another great day for the Black & Blue last Saturday. The Senior School hosted Waverley College across all summer codes and the results were phenomenal. I was fortunate to spend some time with our talented Sailing squad on the beautiful Pittwater and the skills and courage shown by the boys was sensational. Our Sailing team is joined by girls from Pymble LC and this provides a great opportunity to race against each other. Fingers crossed some more competition opens up in Term 1 for our talented Sailors.
Whale Beach was also packed with Knox boys wearing the Black & Blue on Saturday in magic conditions - practising and honing their Surf Life Saving skills attempting to pass various courses in coming weeks such as the Bronze Medallion and the SRC course. We had as many as 60 boys running, swimming, surfing, paddle boarding and practising resuscitation skills in readiness for their testing. Good luck boys.
The Knox Stealers Baseball Team have made a strong start to their 2020/21 season also. With some dominant high scoring performances that have consisted of 29 runs from only 3 games. This was highlighted in the round 3 clash against Westboomers which resulted in a 12-1 victory to our Knox team. The boys look to continue their rich vein of form against Concord this weekend. Go Knox.
