Respect

Here at Knox it can be easy to take things for granted and people who have been in the School over the last few years may not be quite as aware of how beautiful our campuses are becoming compared to somebody who hasn’t been here for five years or so. If the latter were to return there is no doubt they would say the School and the grounds are quite beautiful. The gardens, buildings and our sporting fields all contribute to the wonderful surrounds of this great School.

Generally, of course, the students appreciate it and look after the campus. We don’t have too much litter, have very little graffiti and we don’t have too many problems with students making other students lives miserable. But we do have some of all of this, and that is a shame. We want all of our students to respect themselves and to respect other people’s rights to enjoy the surroundings and learn and discover. We want them, too, to respect those who aid the process, whether it be teacher or coach or grounds staff. Grounds and buildings are meaningless without people and the School is lucky to have a community of staff and students who make the School alive and vibrant.

Social Justice

Mrs Helen Clarke, Head of Diversity, Justice and Stewardship

This year we are challenging Knox young men to develop Awareness, Advocacy and Action based skills in the compassionate service of their community - local, regional and international.

Thank you to all those in the community who attended our 2020 Knox International Women’s Breakfast
Our guest speaker was Sallianne McClelland who is a local champion of the Hornsby Women’s Shelter and other community groups, as well as the leading the ‘Mobilising for Mogo’ Initiative. Sallianne inspired those present with her tenacity in supporting the township of Mogo who were badly impacted by the recent bushfires. Her stories of the resilience of the people of Mogo and the open hearts of the many in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Community who have given such enormous support to the community will stay with those present. She urged us to continue to support those at Mogo and those in regional Australia who are still impacted by the ravages of drought and now floods!

Mrs Sue Floro

It is becoming common to hear that mistakes are great; failure is good; and that persistence is the key to eventual success, after all those mistakes and failures. I came across a research article recently that studied this and I was relieved to read the caveats in which these statements should actually be couched.

The study was not based on the educational field, but on an analysis of more than 750 000 grant application submissions from 1985 to 2015. Researchers sought to create a mathematical model to reliably predict the success or failure of an undertaking – this we can apply to our context.

Online course for parents

Together with Bravehearts (Knox’s child protection education and training partner) we are inviting parents to participate in an online child protection course. Knox has been working closely with Bravehearts to co-design education and training programs for staff, students and parents over many years. The parent online course has been written to provide increased awareness and understanding of child protection issues and strategies, with the intent of promoting the safety of young people. If you would like to register for the course  please complete this online form.

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees.  Amelia Earheart.

We encourage the boys to sprinkle kindness which promotes a feeling of trust, strengthening their kindness muscles. By releasing high levels of oxytocin makes kindness an exercise in developing happiness. Every act of kindness we create has the potential to cause a butterfly effect that creates a chain of events. The power to consciously create change is a great superpower we have been given, and with this power, there comes a great responsibility.  To be a superhero, you don’t have to have superpowers; you just need to be a super human being.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary-Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

In our first Knoxigations unit, Kindergarten are exploring how families are the same and different.

We are fully engrossed in our big idea as we have been finding out how families are the same and different in lots of ways – for example: in size, things they like to do together, where they live and the foods they eat. We have made collages and graphs, created families using toys, talked about our families and shared our thinking in sorting out what we already know.

The boys have loved exploring the Knoxigations Unit of Inquiry, ‘Celebrations Connect Communities’. The boys have moved through the inquiry process and continue to improve their transdisciplinary skills. Thank you to all the families who assisted the boys in researching about their family, culture and how they celebrate a variety of special moments.

This week 2F will be hosting the K-2 assembly at 2pm in the K-2 Void. Congratulations to the Year 2 boys who have presented at their assembly so far. All of the boys have demonstrated their confidence speaking in front of their parents and peers. Well done!

Coming up in Week 10 of this term we have our first excursion for the year to Narrabeen Coastal Environment Centre. This is a brilliant, hands-on excursion where the boys are immersed in a variety of ecosystems ready for their next Knoxigations unit, Interconnected Systems. Information outlining the details of the excursion will be sent home to parents at the end of Week 7.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

Reading is one of the most beneficial activities that students can be involved in. Reading assists your son in all Key Learning Areas as well as in their social interactions both at school and in their community. In light of this, the Prep School emphasises the need for your son to read on a daily basis and it is also an essential component of homework in Year 3. Having said that, reading for many boys can become just a verbalisation of words. Without parental input and guidance, even the best readers may miss out on the benefits of reading for meaning. In light of this, I cannot stress enough the importance of all students taking part in the 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge, which officially commenced earlier this week. Students will be provided with more information on this important government initiative during their weekly Library lessons and all boys will be strongly encouraged to reach their targeted reading goal.

Year 4 News

Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader

Last Wednesday 26 February - Friday 28 February, Year 4 went to camp at Rathane. We were very fortunate to have three beautiful days in the bushy surrounds along the Port Hacking River.

Our three days away provided an excellent opportunity to regroup after a busy start to the year. It gave the boys time to develop friendships and teamwork skills within their classes, and it promoted the ideals of having a go, being courageous and challenging oneself; all expectations within our Year 4 classrooms. We were very excited to recognise many of the boys’ wonderful achievements using our School’s new commendation policy.

Year 5 camp
The Year 5 boys are still talking about camp! The dads coming was a big hit with many boys saying that was their favourite part. Camp Somerset staff were so impressed with the manner of our boys and that they were willing to give so many new things a go. Many boys experienced camping for the first time. You would have been so proud of your sons as they challenged the wombat hole, climbed on ropes and worked as a team to create a weatherproof shelter in the bush. I want to congratulate the boys on how they represented our school.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

Year 6 are continuing to progress well throughout the term showing great skills as leaders of the school and showing themselves to be exemplary role models. Over the past two weeks, Year 6 has begun the Peer Mediation program in which students give up time in their recess and lunch to spend some time solving some playground issues in K-2 and also in Years 3 and 4. The boys have done an excellent job showcasing their skills in conflict management and are immensely enjoying their time getting to know some of the younger students at the Prep. This will continue throughout the year with boys from each class getting the opportunity to partake in this worthwhile program.

Peter Pan Jr

The performances are:
• Wednesday 1 April, 7pm
• Thursday 2 April, 11.30am and 7pm

The story begins with Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, who visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travellers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce Indian tribe, a band of bungling pirates and, of course, the villainous Captain Hook.

Year 6 are currently rehearsing and are looking forward to presenting this fantastic musical to you all. Please get in early to secure your tickets. Bring family and friends - I think this show is not to be missed!

Mr Martin Haywood

For most boys in the Senior School this weekend coming marks the end of the summer season – and for many of our Year 12 boys, the end of their summer sport for Knox. I’m sure a few will be quite emotional this weekend, hopefully their team mates and coaches can give the boys a great experience and lift them for one last time. Thanks and congratulations to all of the Year 12s that have shown great commitment, whether it be playing or staying around and supporting their mates. A great group of boys that I know will all enjoy the winter season and a great end to their Knox sporting journey.

One very special moment occurred on Saturday and served as a great reminder of all of the wonderful opportunities that sport can provide our boys and teach them many valuable lessons along the way. Integrity is one of the five school values and was on full show in a game of Volleyball. Our Firsts Volleyball were locked in a battle with Cranbrook and sets and scores were all level and points were 24:24. Our Captain, Adam Barnes went up to block a Cranbrook shot and the ball was called out giving Knox the point and go to a one-point lead and set point. Adam immediately stopped the game and told the referee he touched the ball and should have been Cranbrook’s point. We went on to lose the match but there was one very proud coach and staff and big congratulations to Adam and the culture our Volleyball coaches have worked so hard on this season. My favourite story this summer that I was keen to share with our parents. Well done Adam.
