Vaping
A recent article appeared in the Manly Daily regarding a growing trend of vaping (use of e-cigarettes) among young people. The article mentioned a particular rise in the use of mini vapes, which are about the size of a USB memory stick. Many vapes are flavoured and appear to marketed specifically to children and teenagers.

An ABC News article from 2019 referenced a study by the Cancer Council Australia which found that 13% of Australian children aged 12-17 years had tried e-cigarettes.

As a parent and a Headmaster, this issue is of real concern for me as we work in partnership with parents to develop lifelong habits around health and wellbeing for our boys.

Mrs Sue Floro

This week is Science Week at Prep and our boys are revelling in all things scientific! They do love a good science experiment, and when this is combined with construction, ethical discussions, forces, physics and more, it makes for an exciting place to be. Please do ask your son about his Science Week activities. I spent some time with Year 2 today as they built Rube Goldberg models and the boys were so engaged. Thanks to all of the teachers for their input into the design and running of these fabulous Science Week experiences for our Prep boys.

The Mother's Day and Father's Day Stall is now open for orders to be placed. Given the size of our cohort, it is a mammoth undertaking to source, purchase and organise the ordering of these gifts. Our sincere thanks to Mrs Angela Pica for coordinating this enormous job with such enthusiasm, patience and perseverance. If you have not yet ordered, please do so as soon as possible!

Let them be little. Childhood happens once. Provide shelter for your children. Protect your child’s innocence. Make room for wonder.
Heidi St John

Play is a child’s job. Have you ever noticed how focused your son can become during his play, often ignoring instructions and your voice! This is nature’s way of helping children develop and mature in a manner that is appealing to a child.

Play is a way for them to practise real life scenarios in a safe way. It also allows for the creative flow of thoughts and ideas. These are essential to the healthy development of each child, with unstructured playtime assisting their emotional and cognitive development.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

On Monday, Kindergarten celebrated Science Week. We explored the aspects of human impact on our oceans.

After reading the story 'Mr Archimedes Bath' by Pamela Allen, we experimented with Archimedes’ principle of water displacement. We recreated his bath experiment together and then allowed the boys time to test the theory individually. We also investigated where the bathwater goes when we pull the plug, looking at the effect of microbeads from bathroom products that flow into the ocean.

A busy week for Year 2 with Science Day celebrations taking place on Tuesday 18 August. Throughout the day, students explored the concepts of force, motion and the transference of energy through a variety of platforms including; Turing Tumble, Makey Makey Coding, Rube Goldberg machines, and pinwheels. Students will spend time reflecting on the scientific and technological experiments they completed during their rotations with an emphasis on what they wonder about energy and forces. This will be uploaded to Seesaw so you can view all of the wonderful work your son completed over the course of the day. I would like to say a huge thank you to the Year 2 Teachers and the ICT Integrators for the time and effort they put in to make this event successful and exciting for our boys.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

Earlier today, students took part in the Years 3-6 Winter House Gala Day. It was very pleasing to see the level of effort, commitment and house spirit on display by all boys as they participated in their chosen sport. It was also fantastic to see so many of the boys try something different from their regular winter sport selection and adopt the unofficial Prep School motto of ‘have a go’ so enthusiastically.

Poetry Recitals
The Year 5 team were bursting with pride as our Year 5 boys presented their poetry recitals this week. Each year, I am amazed to see the growth that the boys make during this task. This was a challenging thing to ask of the boys - to memorise a poem and then to recite and perform it in front of their peers. A large number of boys have also chosen to have their poetry recital filmed. I am in the process of editing these and the link will be emailed in the next few days.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The boys had a wonderful week last week as they began delving deeply into our Sustainable Solutions task as we kicked off Science Week on Friday. The boys spent the day developing their groups and working through the design learning process in order to build their skills in collaboration and begin to think about solving a current Sustainability issue present, both globally and locally. Throughout the day, the boys took part in masterclass sessions focusing on economics, ethics, marketing, data science and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The boys did a wonderful job taking in the information and in the afternoon session began looking at group roles and expectations for each member of their group. Over the next six to eight weeks the boys will have class time to continue to work through their group project. We are very hopeful that by the end of this project the students will be able to share the wonderful work they have completed through an online sharing system for you to view. We are very excited about the work the boys are going to complete and we are certain they will come up with some wonderful designs.

Mr Martin Haywood

Last Saturday, our Year 12 students enjoyed their final experience wearing the Black & Blue across all codes. For many, it was against good friends and local rivals Barker College. All boys performed exceptionally well and were supported by their Year 11 team mates with time to sing the school song one last time on a field or court. I hope all boys had much fun and will continue to play sport for many years to come and remain fit and healthy – and build upon the great friendships forged around the sporting fields. Thank you, boys, for the wonderful memories. We are very fortunate to farewell such a great group of boys who have all contributed to leaving Knox Sport in a wonderful place.

Great news with our Knox 1st XI winning the CAS Football Premiership with another victory on Saturday. This extremely talented group of boys went through the season undefeated and finished with a 2-1 victory at Barker on Saturday. Knox last won the CAS competition in 2016 – this was well worth the wait.
