Mr Scott James

Beyond the curriculum there are a number of important life skills schools can teach students.

Firstly, schools can teach students respect and self-discipline. I am not talking about the authoritarian discipline of earlier centuries which, thankfully, is a thing of the past. What I’m talking about is the need for young people to learn that they cannot always have what they want, and that self-discipline helps young people delay gratification, resist unhealthy temptations, and tolerate the discomfort needed to reach their long-term goals.

Young people need to know what is expected of them and that limits need to be set. They also need to know that if they over-reach that limit there will be inevitable consequences. The importance here is not in the severity of the consequence but in its inevitability.

What a start to 2020! In Week 2, we started our weekly training programs and welcomed a large cohort of Year 7 debaters into our program across our two training sessions on Monday and Thursday. It is great to see that so many boys are keen to develop their public speaking and persuasive skills, and we hope that they are really enjoying debating at Knox. The full list of training times and locations can be found on the Knox Debating Board

Mrs Sue Floro

The buzz of the school playground, and its corridors and classrooms is one of the things I enjoy most about my role. At Prep, there is a constant hum of activity, although sometimes a little louder than a hum! This week has been quiet, though, with Years 3 and 5 at camp in the first part of the week and Year 4 looking forward to their camp experience from Wednesday to Friday. At the time of writing, all reports are that the boys are having a truly fabulous time, stretching themselves by attempting new and challenging activities that they may not have tried before; learning to live in community, which means waiting in line for food – firsts, seconds and sometimes even thirds restoring fuel after long days filled with activity. It is also a time to work together to solve problems, to support one another when someone is a little homesick.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary-Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

The Kindergarten boys have shown great courage with how they are handling the everyday challenges of school. There are so many new routines to remember like where to line up when the bell goes, how to enter the classroom and unpack for the day, as well as making sure to use the bathroom during break times. There are also many new responsibilities to embrace, such as packing and carrying their school bag and wearing their Knox school uniform with pride.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

The Year 3 boys returned home safely from their camp adventure yesterday following nearly two days spent at Point Wolstoncroft Sport & Recreation Centre. I am extremely proud to report that the boys were incredibly settled, well behaved and enthusiastic during our time away. It was also very pleasing to hear the number of positive comments from the Point Wolstoncroft staff and instructors who were very impressed with the levels of maturity and good manners displayed by the boys. Additionally, it was most encouraging to see so many boys trying different activities, forming new friendships and putting themselves in situations where they were required to test their limits on various challenges. I would also like to thank all the Year 3 parents who ensured their son was appropriately prepared and packed for the camp prior to departure ... this was certainly no small feat!

This morning Year 4 set off for an exciting three-day camp at Camp Rathane. Whilst at camp the boys will participate in a variety of activities including abseiling, billy cart making, archery, rock climbing and a boat excursion to a sandbar. The boys will be supported throughout by their peers and teachers.

No doubt they will sleep well tonight before it all begins again tomorrow! We look forward to sharing photos with you.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The Year 6 boys are having an enjoyable week on the playground as they get Ireland Field all to themselves with the Year 5 boys off at camp. The boys have continued to show excellent aptitude to their work throughout the first term and have continued to work hard in their inquiry unit focusing on Natural Disasters. Over the next two weeks the boys will begin to narrow their focus to pick one Natural Disaster with they will independently research and provide a tech based solution through the form of a detection system. The boys have completed some excellent work in their unit of inquiry thus far and we look forward to seeing their final product which will be in the form of a National Geographic Magazine. There will be a celebration of learning coming up in Week 8 in which we encourage as many parents to come along as possible!

Mr Martin Haywood

Despite the weather, we were able to give some very deserving boys in Year 7 their first taste of Senior School Cricket in the afternoon at Waverley and Gillespie Fields – and by all accounts they absolutely loved it. Well done and thank you for your patience over the last few weeks.

The Great Hall was again the scene for the Tartan Army to get behind our Basketballers, whilst they also were good enough to find the pool and cheer home our Water Polo Firsts in a nail biter over St Ignatius’ College to remain undefeated with just two rounds remaining. Knox has never won the combined CAS/GPS Water Polo competition and this would be a remarkable achievement. They have worked extremely hard, going right back to a camp in September 2019 where they made a commitment to each other on that camp. It is becoming a reality and shows what we can achieve if we set ourselves goals and trust the process. The winning goal on Saturday was literally right on full time in front of one very proud Headmaster.
