Mr Scott James

World Teachers’ Day
Last week communities around the world celebrated World Teachers’ Day.  This international event is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible contributions of teachers as they work tirelessly to improve student outcomes and shaping the lives of young people for future success.

Teachers make a significant and lasting impression on young people. Most adults can remember inspirational teachers and the long-lasting influence they have had on their lives. Good teachers can make a huge difference to how young people feel about themselves and how much they can achieve.

Good teachers have a passion for improving the lives of young people. They enjoy learning themselves and they pass on that enthusiasm to their students. They are knowledgeable about what they teach and, more importantly, they can pass on that knowledge to others.

Good teachers like young people, and it shows. They advocate for them with passion and don’t give up on even the most challenging student. The most wonderful thing that can happen to a teacher is being there when a child’s face lights up and he or she says, “I understand”.

Fees In Advance Program

For many years the School has offered a ‘fees in advance’ program to enable increased flexibility of such payments. The program is attractive for many reasons, enabling parents to make lump sum payments for years ahead which attract discounts to the scheduled fees. To qualify, upfront full year payments must be made for a minimum of one year and the payments must be made by 13 November in the year before your payment program begins. Payments will only be accepted by direct funds transfer or cheque (credit card or BPAY payments are not permitted for this program).

Details of the Fees in Advance Program can be found here on the Knox website. Alternatively, you might like to discuss this in confidence with Betty Fowler from the School’s Accounts Department on 9487 0442.

Mrs Sue Floro

The term is literally galloping along at a frenetic pace! This week, we have welcomed our brand new Kindies for 2021 onto campus for some orientation activities, and have been so impressed with their independence and excitement as they look forward to beginning their learning adventure with us. It is hard to comprehend that they will graduate from Knox in 2033!

This week, I received an email from Robyn Miller, CEO of Kids Giving Back,
a charity that provides meaningful, hands on experiences for children and young people to give back to others. Robyn wrote to express her sincere thanks and appreciation of Joshua Stiles’ efforts in volunteering for the charity. Congratulations Joshua – you are living our Knox Values in the community and your efforts have been noticed and applauded.

K-2 Happenings

Mrs Chris Gray, K-2 Coordinator

Children are the future. Nurture them right, so that they grow up to be able leaders and lead the world towards light.

We have had so much to celebrate this week. We welcomed Kindergarten 2021 into the K-2 Centre and were so impressed with the big smiles and excited faces that brightened the pirate ship. K-2 2020 look so grown up as they make connections with their learning and we look back on their journey and celebrate each boys individual achievements.

Each class is busy preparing for our very special K-2 Concert which will be filmed next week in the Senior School. This will be sent to you by the end of the year so that you can celebrate the success and achievements of your little man. I look forward to sharing this exciting chapter with you soon.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

Kindergarten has begun to explore the big idea in our final Knoxigations unit, 'Christmas Connects Communities'. We are investigating how people in different countries have different Christmas traditions. We look at why countries celebrate in different ways and how communities come together at Christmas time.

Year 1 News

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

This week Year 1 are eagerly awaiting their chance to participate in the Knox Preparatory School Lap-a-thon. We have been training hard and are so excited to be part of such a great cause.

Last week in our ‘Tuning In’ phase of our inquiry ‘Energy Powers and Enhances Our World’ students were asked to think of ways that energy is important in their everyday lives and to record their responses. We then discovered the many ways we use energy each and every day. Following this we have begun investigating
sound energy. All of Year 1 went on a listening walk. We sat quietly and just listened to the world around us. We heard many interesting sounds in our environment and the discussion around the source of these sounds was amazing. This activity is a great reminder to us all to take the time to stop and appreciate the world around us.

Year 2 News

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

This week in Knoxigations, boys have been exploring why it is important that all children around the world receive the same human rights including; clean water, fresh air and healthy food. Students have been learning about the United Nations and their goal to make the world safer, fairer and more just for everyone, using their 17 Sustainable Goals. The Year 2 teachers encourage all parents to ask their sons about these goals and prompt a conversation about what families can do in their daily lives to reach the UN goals by 2030.

Year 3 News

Mrs Tina Ruddock, Year 3 Team Leader

The Year 3 students conducted the Lapathon to raise money for a worthy cause - Headspace. We are proud of the manner in which the boys participated in this initiative.

In class, students have been talking about the parts of the brain that help them regulate emotions, store information in the memory, work out what is important, and make decisions. The boys have been fascinated about how their brains work and how these parts of the brain interact with each other so that we can function each day. It is important information for them to understand why they feel the way they do at times. We will continue these lessons throughout the term.

Letters to Year 5 2021
Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, our boys were unable to meet the new boys who will be joining the School in 2021. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to welcome the new boys joining us, the boys have written lovely letters that share their own personal advice and experiences about joining Knox. The sincerity and warmth of their letters is a wonderful introduction to the School for those joining in 2021.

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

Knox Film Festival
The halls and seats of the JAPAC felt empty without the boys and parents on site. We loved seeing you all linked in for our live viewing of the Knox Film Festival and appreciate the number of people that also got involved the ‘watch carefully’ quizzes throughout the evening. This year, we set the boys the challenge of creating a film without any dialogue. In case that was not difficult enough, we also asked them to create their film around one of our Knox Prep Core Values.

The Year 5 team could not be more impressed with the quality of the films the boys produced this year. The values and life lessons depicted were honourable and we were so pleased that the boys learnt the skills of filming, sounds effects or background music, editing, creation of posters and in some cases creating the accompanying music.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

Another very busy week for the boys in Year 6 as they head towards their final weeks in the Prep School. Over the past two weeks, the boys have had two sessions on their Interrelate program. This program walks the boys through some of the changes that may occur for them as they begin their journey into adolescents. The boys have done a wonderful job listening thoughtfully and asking interesting and insightful questions. As a part of this program, the boys have had some homework and hopefully, they have shared this with you over the past week. We have our final Interrelate session next Monday.

Knox Prep Sustainability Portfolio

Wrapping for a Sustainable Future

The Knox Prep Sustainability Portfolio are excited to announce we are selling Beeswax wraps, a sustainable and reusable alternative for packaging school lunches and morning tea snacks. The wraps are made from 100% cotton which help keep your food fresh for longer, without absorbing the flavours.

Join with us in reducing the amount of cling wrap, foil, paper bags and single-use plastic bags used by replacing them with a more personable, eco-friendly and sustainable product.

The money raised from the sale of these items will help build the ‘Sustainability and Wellbeing Garden Space’ at the Prep School.

Mr Martin Haywood

Unfortunately weather played its part again on Saturday with many cancellations across the majority of outdoor sports. I hope everyone is receiving the alerts via the school app and saving themselves a trip across Sydney. If you are having difficulties please do not hesitate to email sports@knox.nsw.edu.au to receive help in getting these last-minute alerts on Saturday.

Congratulations to those that did get on and play on the weekend, with so many wonderful results across all codes. This summer is again proving very successful, and all credit to the boys and their commitment to training. Attendance at training has been exceptional, thank you to everyone for their help with this positive shift in attitude.
