Mr Scott James

NSW Curriculum Review
NSW is undergoing its biggest curriculum overhaul in 30 years, with a review released on 23 October. In very simple terms, the review found the curriculum to be cluttered and placing undue importance on the HSC and ATAR rankings at the expense of real world skills.

The report concluded that a “cluttered curriculum” has encouraged “superficial coverage of material”. The review also stated the curriculum was “insufficiently focused on equipping every student with the knowledge, skills and attributes they will require for further learning, life and work”.

Other proposals contained within the review included reducing the number of subjects offered in the senior years, as well as the amount of content to be covered. This, the report argues, will lead to “syllabuses that are leaner in content and more focused on developing deep understandings of disciplinary concepts and principles”.

Mrs Linda Gomez, Careers Advisor/Psychologist

More than 400 students from Years 9 to 12 and their parents attended the inaugural Careers Insight Evening, a partnership with the OKGA, on Monday 28 October. The event commenced with an opening address from James Hunter, National Managing Partner at KPMG, who presented on the global competencies valued by employers and how students can utilise their experiences and opportunities at Knox to develop diversity of skills. Students were then invited to attend breakout sessions where they heard from our Old Boys across 16 different careers. A hugely successful night, one where students heard some great insights, inspiration, and advice. Thank you to our Old Boys who generously gave their time to return to Knox to share their knowledge and personal insights into their industry.

Mrs Sue Floro

Imagine a day where silence was the order of the day; a day where boys committed to silence in order to help those who cannot; a day where their commitment to silence translated into a significant effect for children in Cambodia who cannot speak, and who have no access to the speech therapy services that we take for granted here in Australia.

I am overwhelmed by so many aspects of our Day Without Speech initiative. We raised in excess of $7500, which is singularly outstanding, but I am more impressed by the boys’ connection to the cause, their enthusiasm for helping children in another part of the world, and their increasing understanding of the role they can play as they seek to make a difference in our world. I am also incredibly impressed with our Year 1 cohort, who led the initiative – the idea, the marketing, rallying others to get on board. Who says that tiny little people can’t be agents of change? Bravo Prep boys!

'Gratitude is one of the strongest and most transformative states of being. It shifts your perspective from lack to abundance and allows you to focus on the good in your life, which in turn pulls more goodness into your reality.’ Jen Sincero

The world is a busy place and sometimes we forget that our boys are just ‘little boys'. We often talk about the benefits of play and the need to keep perspective. You are on a long journey with your son and need to remove your ideas of what you thought your child would be like and really appreciate the one you have. Each child is different, with different qualities, flaws, and personalities and each should be parented in a way that suits their needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

Last week students took part in the annual Summer Sports Gala Day event. It was incredibly pleasing to see the high level of sportsmanship and House spirit on display as the boys participated in their chosen sport. For many students this may not have been their first sporting preference, yet the Year 3 teachers were particularly impressed with the level of maturity and resilience demonstrated by the boys who were still able to enjoy the day, regardless of the activity in which they took part.

Debating
As part of our speaking and listening program, the boys are developing arguments and presenting rebuttals to their peers. This involves them respectfully listening to each other and developing arguments supported with facts and evidence. Debate topics often revolve around current affairs and events and so an understanding of these can be beneficial. We encourage all families to have regular conversations around the table in the evening.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

Well done to Year 6 as they presented their final products for their Sustainable Solutions end of unit task this week. The boys were tasked with identifying and researching one sustainability issue which is present in today’s society. They then had to design their own product which they feel could assist in alleviating the damage caused by this sustainability issue. The boys produced some fantastic work and used many different technological devices to create their solutions including 3D printing, micro:bits and the micro:bit robit smart cars. It was a fantastic way for the boys to finish their unit and showcased just how far they have come with their research skills since the beginning of the year. Well done boys!

K-2 Literacy Centre and 3-6 Library

Years 3-6 Book Swap
On Tuesday 29 October, the Year 6 Library leaders held a Book Swap to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF). The Book Swap was held during recess and lunch, raising $143 for the ILF. Students who wished to participate were asked to donate a book that they no longer needed, and swap it for a ‘new’ read. Students from 3-6 were involved, and there was much excitement as decisions were made about which book to select. The funds raised by the students will be used to publish a range of books for children, written in both English and the Indigenous language spoken, in particular communities in South Australia. Well done to the library leaders on a successful Book Swap.

From the Head of Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy

knox/bios/2021/10/22/Haywood_Martin.jpg

Mr Martin Haywood

Thanks to all for understanding and patience around our concerns for the boys over the last week and the poor air quality - particularly our concerns for those with respiratory issues. We will continue to monitor air quality and ensure we take all measure to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for all students.

Last Saturday many of our Senior School teams played Trinity and whilst the results were strong across all ages and grades, it has to be acknowledged Trinity were too good in the Firsts CAS competition Basketball, Cricket, Volleyball and Tennis. Whilst we all love a few wins, it is often the losses that teach us so much about ourselves, our teammates and how hard we are prepared to work at our game. Fortunately, we get another chance at Trinity in term 1 and that is a weekend to look forward to already. It reminds me of the advice Nathan Lyon gave our boys recently about accepting losses and continue to keep learning from each and every experience - trust the coaching and stay disciplined. Never ever give up and make sure we continue to have fun and enjoy each other's company.

One of the many highlights from sport on Saturday was on the Squash courts where Premier 1 Rishi Deshpande (Y12) played Kazuyuki Fuse (Y8) - both Knox players. This match produced the best in both boys with Rishi taking a 2-0 lead dominating both games controlling the 'T'. It was looking like a 3-0 win, but Kazuyuki's mindset didn't allow him to give up as he set about making a remarkable come back to win the next three games and take the match 3-2. In K12 Johnny Yuan vs Barker 6 played an outstanding match winning the first game then losing the next two 17/20 and 17/19.

Johnny refocused playing length to take the next game 15/12 and set himself up for the come back of the year taking the fifth 15/10 for an overall win 3-2. This highlights the competitiveness and the desire of our squash players to always do their best and never give up.
