Social media and social isolation
The deepest truth about human beings is we absolutely need each other. We depend on families, schools and communities to protect and support us and to give us a sense of our identity.

Regrettably, when you think about contemporary Australia it's very clear what our major social problem has become: we are more socially fragmented than we have ever been.

What really concerns me is our almost addictive attachment to technology and IT devices. The greatest paradox of the IT revolution is that while new technology connects us digitally, it also makes it easier than ever for us to stay apart from each other.

Australian social researcher Hugh Mackay writes about social isolation and fragmentation:

“Like most species on the planet we are social beings, we’re hopeless in isolation, we absolutely depend on social groups and communities to nurture, sustain and protect us. We do need each other.”

It is Mackay’s view that we are more socially disconnected than ever before and therefore we have an epidemic of anxiety.

In other words, social connection is critical to mental wellbeing. Within a school context, strong connections and a sense of belonging have a profound effect on the knowledge and skills that students can learn, retain and apply. Research also indicates that social connection at school, at home and in the community protect against poor mental health and fosters academic growth.

Handwriting Course

Ms Rebecca Papageorgiou

Each term, Knox holds a Handwriting Course designed to help improve the speed, accuracy and neatness of students’ handwriting, reducing tension and fatigue when writing for long periods of time. In 2020 the classes will be held by Ms Lisa Norton, an occupational therapist, who specialises in the development of skills necessary for handwriting and the remediation of handwriting difficulties.

We are now filling places for our Term 4, 2020 course.

Rhys is currently an Account Executive with Salesforce, a cloud software business that helps companies grow by automating processes and improving customer experience. Both Mark and Rhys spoke about the ‘dos and don’ts’ of social media, as well as strategies used to stand out to recruitment professionals and employers. The session covered practical tips on using LinkedIn to showcase your skills and experience. Fees in Advance Program

For many years the School has offered a ‘fees in advance’ program to enable increased flexibility of such payments. The program is attractive for many reasons, enabling parents to make lump sum payments for years ahead which attract discounts to the scheduled fees. To qualify, upfront full year payments must be made for a minimum of one year and the payments must be made by 13 November in the year before your payment program begins. Payments will only be accepted by direct funds transfer or cheque (credit card or BPAY payments are not permitted for this program).

Details of the Fees in Advance Program can be found here on the Knox website. Alternatively, you might like to discuss this in confidence with Betty Fowler from the School’s Accounts Department on 9487 0442.

Mrs Sue Floro

Not even the rain could not dampen the enthusiasm of our Prep boys at our annual Book Week book character parade on Tuesday! We did miss having our parents there to cheer on the boys as they paraded around the oval, but you’ll be pleased to know that as Mr Quach, our MC on the microphone, asked the boys who had made their costumes, most said their parents had ‘helped them’. It’s amazing how creative our families can be with clothing hanging in wardrobes and old pieces of costume jewellery laying around in drawers! Thank you for the time you spent working on this with your sons. It is very much appreciated. The photos will be available in time for the next edition of the Knoxonian.

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

As you are aware, this week is Book Week and what an action-packed week it has been so far!

Firstly, classroom doors have been colourfully decorated with book titles by every class, creating much intrigue. Kindergarten used some of their favourite books like, ‘Hector the Hermit Crab’ by Katie Boyce, ‘The Potato People’ by Pamela Allen, ‘The Gruffalo’ by Julia Donaldson and “Feathers for Phoebe” by Rod Clement.

Our week began with a special announcement of Book Week art winners. Congratulations to Austin from KB, Darius from KG, Ian from KM and Louis from KP. The whole of Kindergarten is to be commended for impressive artworks which were judged by Mrs Floro. She said it was an extremely difficult choice to select the winners!

Year 1 are enjoying celebrating Book Week. The book parade was such a great way to share our favourite characters and we enjoyed watching other grades parade as well. There were lots of ‘Curious Creatures’ in Year One! We all had such a fun morning. We are looking forward to our Author Zoom with Aura Parker on Thursday and cannot wait to ask her all about her book ‘Twig’ and the illustrations from the book.

Book Week is in full swing with boys having a wonderful time participating in the Book Character Parade. How magical it was to see the love of reading that is prevalent in the Year 2 boys with many Curious Creatures and Wild Minds on display. Thank you to all parents for taking the time to assist your son in preparing their costume for the parade - their smiling faces really did say it all! Students also enjoyed our virtual author visits with Gus Gordon and Aura Parker, exploring the planning and construction of picture books and were enthralled by the process in which illustrations were brought to life.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

What a wonderful week it was as the Year 6 boys went off to Camp at the Colo River. The weather was magnificent as the spring weather made it warm during the day and nice and cool through the evening. The boys packed their bags and arrived at school Wednesday morning full of excitement about the three days ahead. After a camp briefing and some lunch the boys were off for their first activity for the day. Groups completing activities such as the milk crate stack, all aboard, archery, raft building and the always fun base seven. The boys did an amazing job navigating the challenges that they faced on camp. Without doubt, the biggest challenge of the camp was learning how to pitch their own tent! It was magnificent for the boys to get away and spend some time outdoors with so many activities this year being unable to go ahead. I would like to think all the staff who attended the camp for their wonderful effort in supporting the boys. Special thank you to Mrs Inglis in the office who spent countless hours organising the camp.

Knox Prep Sustainability Portfolio

Raising seedlings to raise money for our Knox Prep Sustainability & Wellbeing Garden Space

Our Knox Prep Sustainability Portfolio have been working hard, using their ‘eco-minds’, to generate ways that our school can be more sustainable.

To help educate the Prep boys, to complement our curriculum programming and to support the wellbeing of our students and school community, the Sustainability portfolio have designed a draft for a ‘Sustainability and Wellbeing Garden Space’.

For this initiative to move to the construction stage, the boys have decided to raise cucumber, tomato, pumpkin and zucchini seeds to sell to our school community to provide funds to ‘grow’ our proposed garden space.

Watch the video below to check out what we have been doing.

Mr Martin Haywood

I hope everyone enjoyed a great start to the summer season with many boys trying a sport for the first time, a number of boys moving up grades into new teams and pushing themselves to be the very best whilst others could not wipe the smile off their face and happy to be back wearing the Black & Blue and representing Knox.

Thanks to all for checking in at each entry point and understanding that some areas required a little patience and waiting time for a facility to be cleared and cleaned before new groups could enter. Our new facility, the MacNeil Basketball courts was very well received and the boys are loving the outdoor space and showing off their skills.
