Mr Scott James

In just four years' time Knox Grammar School will reach its centenary… 100 years will have passed by.

Our founding Headmaster, Neil MacNeil, oversaw the growth of the School in the vibrant post war period, through the deprivation of the Great Depression and thence to the outbreak of World War II. Throughout that period, MacNeil often spoke and wrote about a theme which endures to this day and which I believe has provided that solid foundation of a distinctively Knox approach… “optimism”.

At the height of the Great Depression, for example, he addressed the School with the following words: “for myself, I maintain what has been called an outlook of reasonable optimism. To say that we might not emerge from this great economic collapse is to underestimate the courage of youth.”

Handwriting Course

Ms Rebecca Papageorgiou

Each term, Knox holds a Handwriting Course designed to help improve the speed, accuracy and neatness of students’ handwriting, reducing tension and fatigue when writing for long periods of time. In 2020 the classes will be held by Ms Lisa Norton, an occupational therapist, who specialises in the development of skills necessary for handwriting and the remediation of handwriting difficulties.

We are now filling places for our Term 3, 2020 course.

Operation Gratitude
Two of the key values of Knox Grammar School are compassion and courage.

We are developing a project to thank COVID-19 front line workers and send letters to those isolated in local Aged Care Facilities.

There will be a series of committees of students from Stage 4 and Stage 5 and Year 11 formed to coordinate Operation Gratitude. This is an opportunity for all students to participate in the Project and develop leadership and organisation skills. We aim to commence Week 1 of Term 3 and complete this by Week 3. Please see Year 11 students Ben Rothery and Seb Henriksen who are coordinating this important intiative or email Mrs Clarke for more information.

Mrs Sue Floro

How fabulous it was to be back out on the fields on Saturday for the resumption of IPSHA Sport! Even better, though, was the spirit in which the games were played. We talked at length to the boys about relishing the opportunity to play, rather than focusing on the team they had been allocated to, because with the situation in NSW still precarious, we need to savour each moment that we get in terms of game time. Thank you to the parents who endorsed this with their conversations at home. Your support is very much appreciated.

Last Friday’s Prep Track and Field carnival at Gillespie was a great day! We were blessed with stunning weather and our boys enjoyed running, jumping and throwing throughout the day. My thanks to all of our staff for their organisation and assistance in the smooth running of a very big day, and congratulations to our boys, whose efforts were on display right up to the very last event of the day. Congratulations to Haslett House on their convincing victory!

Food Sharing
Celebrating student birthdays with a cupcake or icy pole is a treat that the boys, and staff, frequently look forward to. However, COVID-19 prevention guidelines state the schools should “avoid the sharing of food”. As such, we regrettably request that parents withhold sending their son to school with birthday treats to share with the class at this time. Thank you for your understanding and support on this matter

Wet Weather & Carline
With the recent wet weather, it is a timely reminder to pack your son a raincoat or umbrella. The afternoon Kiss and Ride carline will run rain, hail or shine and it is vital that the boys are able to protect themselves from the elements.

Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting.
Joyce Meyer

How do we develop positive traits like patience, joy, love, gentleness, and self-control? No one is born with a good character, it has to be taught and learned. Teaching patience in children is one of the most important skills your child can learn and one of the first steps to learning delayed gratification. The K-2 carline has been a valuable lesson in practising patience and modelling appropriate behaviour to your sons. By experiencing the process and managing our emotions we are all able to appreciate the progress made by the end of week 1.

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

One of Kindergarten’s favourite parts of the day is reading a storybook. Not only is it a precious and enjoyable experience sharing quality literature together, it is important in developing literacy and oral language skills.

Many of the storybooks we read, tie in with our Knoxigations units. Last week we read ‘Ernie Dances to the Digeridoo’ by Alison Lester. The story is about Ernie who is going to live in Arnhem Land. He flies above the desert and travels over the floodplains to arrive at his new home. Not only are we learning about the Aboriginal people of Arnhem Land and how they live, we learn about the different environments within Australia which directly links to our current Knoxigations unit, 'Shelters meet the needs of living things in different environments.'

Year 1 News

Miss Nadine Smith, Year 1 Team Leader

In Year 1 we are focusing on ‘Being the ‘i’ in Kind!’ We are especially concentrating on what it means to be kind to others and the many ways we can show kindness to our friends, other Knox students, to our teachers and to our families. In the K-2 Centre all K-2 boys will be adding their acts of kindness to the ‘Wave of Kindness’ in the void. This will allow the boys to see that no act of kindnesses is too small and that the gift of kindness starts with one ripple of kindness and can create a massive wave that reaches everybody. We encourage the boys to continue to be kind when at home and we would love to hear from our Year 1 parents about acts of kindness happening at home.

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

Another fabulous week of learning is off to a great start in Year 2. Boys have hit the ground running with their Food Packaging Design Challenge and it has been wonderful to see the boys giving constructive feedback to their peers in order to further improve their prototype. A small reminder to please remind your son to bring a fully stocked pencil case to school each day.

Year 3 News

Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader

Last Friday the House Track & Field Carnival was held locally at Gillespie Field. It was most pleasing to witness the keen sense of House spirit displayed by the boys as well as the excellent levels of sportsmanship shown towards fellow competitors. Despite not being able to accommodate spectators on the day, the boys still managed to create a lively atmosphere for all involved!

Year 4 News

Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader

Hey You!
Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give. Over the coming weeks, our Year 4 team will continue to reiterate this important message. Kindness to ourselves has been particularly important throughout 2020, but we also want our boys to understand that kindness to others makes a world of difference. We can’t wait to ‘catch out’ our boys being kind to others and we look forward to encouraging them to recognise kindness in the thoughts and actions of their peers. How great will it be to hear the words: ‘Hey you! I just caught you being kind.’ ?

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

Poetry Recital
Many of the boys used the holiday period to memorise their poem and they are now focussing on how best to ‘tell a story’ and perform it. A poetry recital is a challenging yet rewarding experience; quite different to presenting a speech, where the boys are learning to use a variety of techniques such as pause or volume to enhance certain aspects of the poem or to generate suspense. To be able to engage an audience, through story telling is a critical skill that can be transferred to a variety of roles when our boys have finished school. Through our poetry analysis unit, the boys have discovered how the Australian identity has been portrayed and changed over time.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The boys had a wonderful first week back last week and have come back to school with enthusiasm and zest as they commence their penultimate term of the Prep School. The boys did an amazing job at the athletics carnival last week and we were immensely proud of the leadership they showed throughout the day, both in the effort they showed in their races and the encouragement they gave to the younger boys in the Prep. We hope the boys enjoyed their final athletics carnival in the Prep.

Band Camp- NOTE change of date!
This year we will be having a one-day Band Workshop on Sunday 13 September for all four of our bands. Please note the change of date. There is NO workshop on Sunday 2 August as previously advertised in the calendar. At the workshop we will have intensive rehearsals and tutorials and I have also organised a very exciting and special ensemble to entertain the boys! Instead of having a major end of camp concert, we will be streaming the concert LIVE for parents to watch from their own home (or wherever they may be) on laptops or other devices.  Time of the concert and further information on the camp will be emailed shortly so stay tuned!

Mr Martin Haywood

I hope everyone enjoyed the start of our winter season with all teams and sports now up and running. I really appreciate everyone’s understanding of the situation and the policies put in place to ensure boys from Knox and opposition schools had an opportunity to play or compete in a safe environment. The resilience shown by all boys and staff in recent times has been outstanding and a real credit to the School. I was particularly proud of the efforts of so many teams that were moved up divisions on Saturday to ensure everyone had a game. With such a long wait to start the season, every effort was made to avoid a bye. The draw this week looks a lot more reasonable and good matchups for all teams.

The Prep School held their annual Track & Field Championships at Gillespie and the boys had a great time. Whilst there were many outstanding individual performances, the day is an introduction to Athletics for many boys and the chance to run for their House. Well done to all boys and staff on a great event.
