Mr Scott James

It appears the NSW Coronavirus curve is continuing to flatten. This is good news as we aim to slow the transmission of COVID-19 to a manageable level so hospitals don't get overwhelmed.

With the flattening of the curve, schools across the state are beginning to scale-up student attendance from May 11. I am more than hopeful that we can greatly expand our face-to-face teaching and other programs in the coming weeks. This will, of course, depend on the local and national situation regarding COVID-19 and the protocols which are place.

Naturally, like all schools, we want nothing more than to have our boys and girls back on our campuses, enjoying all of our wonderful facilities and experiences as soon as possible.

We have carefully developed a thorough plan for the weeks ahead which is unique to the circumstances and learning environment at Knox. It is important to note that the needs of our diverse community are unique, and that the approach taken by government schools and other non-government schools may be different to our approach.

Social Justice

Mrs Helen Clarke, Head of Diversity, Justice and Stewardship

Welcome to Term 2 – although our social restrictions are still in place, our work for Social Justice continues.

Thank you to all of the Knox students, parents and staff who have volunteered over the past few weeks. Boys delivered flyers alerting isolated residents of support from the Ku-ring-gai Neighbourhood Centre (KNC); visited small businesses to alert them to support Government initiatives; made friendly supportive phone calls to isolated residents; sorted and delivered food for those in need; supported local elderly who needed tasks such as their wheelie bins taken out each week and many of our Knox Pipe Band members played the pipes at local aged care facilities. A wonderful effort from the local community. Our sincere thanks to you all for your compassionate service.

Volunteers are still needed.

If you can spare some time, please sign up with Kur-ing-gai Neighbourhood Centre who need volunteers to support those who are doing it tough at the moment. Contact details can be found here.

Mrs Sue Floro

Our Year 3 boys have spent several weeks investigating commemorations and have worked hard to design and then record our 2020 Prep ANZAC Service, which all boys and families will have the opportunity to view today.

We are excited to see our boys back onsite next week for one day. Later this week, all families will receive notification of the equipment the boys need for the day, and the processes we will undertake to encourage social distancing and strong hygiene practices. I met with our teachers this afternoon and they are all looking forward to spending time face to face with their boys. Whilst our online programs have been incredibly strong, there is nothing quite like the atmosphere in a classroom environment!

Kindergarten News

Mrs Mary-Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader

The boys have settled well into online learning for the beginning of Term Two. They have returned after the Easter break eager to learn, participating in online lessons with focus. It is wonderful to see their developing technical skills as they navigate Zoom meetings and the Seesaw app with ease and confidence.

Maths groups have begun for Kindergarten. The teachers are enjoying getting to know and working with other boys in the year group. The boys are excitedly investigating fractions and finding many practical applications to real-life situations whilst being at home. Making connections to their world contributes to consolidating the concepts we are learning about and deepens their understanding.

With Week 2 well under way the boys have all had a great start to the term. The teachers have been delighted to see how energetic and enthusiastic the boys have been to meet up with us as a class and as a grade on Zoom. We are so proud of how the boys are engaging in their learning through SeeSaw, Nearpod and Google Classroom.

This week boys will continue working on our inquiry unit with a specific focus on ‘Earth’s Natural Resources’ and how we care for them. All boys will participate in a CoSpaces Master Class this week with Mr Milner. This aim of these classes is to teach the boys a variety of skills they can use to create their examples of an Earth’s Treasure.

Year 2 News

Miss Sarah Beaumont-Jones, Year 2 Team Leader

Boys returned to online learning last week with incredible positivity and an eagerness to learn. The Year 2 Teachers were thrilled with their hard work and are so proud of their ability to show initiative when problems arise. We would like to thank parents and students for their continued focus on daily reading, as this is a crucial skill that develops connections, provides endless enjoyment and stimulates curiosity and imagination. In the coming days, the new PMe Collection App will become live on student iPads and will provide an additional resource where boys can continue developing vital reading skills at their own instructional level.

This week, Year 2 boys are investigating the physical and behavioural adaptations made by animals in order to survive in their ecosystem. Students will be learning to classify animals living in various ecosystems based on their observable features and scientific groupings. A virtual trip to Taronga Zoo will also be taking place with students exploring the biomes created at the zoo while making connections between the animals who live there and the ecosystems in which they belong around the world. Viewing the Tiger Cam at the Zoo will also be an incredible opportunity for boys to view real life tigers and discuss their sheer power, speed and strength with their peers.

Today the annual ANZAC Day Service will be held remotely across the Prep School. This occasion is always an important one as students and staff pause to remember the significant sacrifices made by those who served their country during the First World War. I would like to extend my most sincere thanks and congratulations to all of the Year 3 boys who were actively involved in the preparation for this online service.

Our first round of pen licences will be issued next Tuesday. Pen licences are awarded to students who exhibit a positive effort and attitude towards their handwriting across all areas of learning. Boys are issued with a pen licence and take an oath in front of their peers, promising to maintain their high standards of work. We are very proud of our boys for continuing to take pride in their bookwork whilst remote learning.

Year 5 News

Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader

The Year 5 boys have been given the task to ‘Sell the Unsellable’ this week! Some suggestions have been given such as: a pet rock, a concrete umbrella, a bucket with holes and worm pie. Many boys have also adopted their own ideas. Mr Russell created an amazing advertisement to sell the advantages of the online learning environment. In classes we have looked through the speaking presentation rubric in detail and had a turn at marking some examples given to us from Mr Hawke and Mr Kelliher. Today, the boys will submit their draft speech or script for feedback. On Friday, the boys will be ready to present their ad. The focus of the task is the boys’ presentation skills, as opposed to the content of the advertisement, as shown on the rubric.  More information can be found on the Year 5 learning platform.

Year 6 News

Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader

The boys had an excellent week last week after coming back from the holidays. They were engaged, inquisitive, and motivated to get back to their learning which was incredibly impressive for the Year 6 teachers to see. Throughout the coming weeks, the boys will continue learning about different systems of government around the world. We are currently focusing around Australia’s Federal Government System and comparing and contrasting this system with other countries around the world. The boys have an excellent knowledge of the current government structure and enjoying looking at how other countries around the world have different systems of government.

From the Head of Knox Sports and Aquatic Academy

knox/bios/2021/10/22/Haywood_Martin.jpg

Mr Martin Haywood

It has been great to see so many boys engaged in and enjoying the sport experience we have been offering online. Last week we had our experienced team of coaches conducting live sessions and some recorded sessions whilst learning new skills and fitness tips all in front of our team of coaches. The feedback from the students and our coaches has been sensational. Please remember to help us ensure the boys don’t become complacent, and ensure they carry out any activities in a safe manner.

We cannot wait to have the boys back on our campuses over the next few weeks and we are committed to giving the boys a face-to-face experience as soon as we can. How exactly that will look will be dependent on advice and direction from the Government around sport in the coming days – this information will then be passed on to all families with more detail.

I am excited to direct all parents to a new area for the Sports Acadamy in the Knox Remote Learning Hub here.

These pages are designed to showcase the Sports Academy (KSAA); parents can see what is being offered across a wide range of sports, some weekly tips and videos of the boys, and much more. I hope you enjoy, and as always please do not hesitate to email any queries you may have regarding sport to sports@knox.nsw.edu.au

Have a great week
