Headmaster's Column
Mr Scott James
If ever we needed reminding that we live in an interconnected world, the novel coronavirus has brought that home. We have seen a variety of responses to the international outbreak of COVID-19, ranging from mild concern to the almost full-scale panic we have witnessed in shopping centres in the past week. Ultimately, COVID-19 will be a test of not only our health care system and mechanisms for responding to the pandemic, but also of our ability to work together as a community of nations in the face of a common challenge.
Decisions taken by the School up to this point have been made in the best interests of our students, staff, parents and the wider Knox community.
With learning currently online, it’s fair to say the School has a different feel. The familiar chant from the Tartan Army of “Fire up, Knoxy, fire up”, which is a clear illustration of the connectedness, passion and inclusiveness we so often witness, has been temporarily hushed.
At the moment the stands may be silent, but even during these unusual times it is clear the School is still “fired up”. A number of boys have been working tirelessly to ensure the community remains connected, whether it’s through the creation of videos, online messages, or ‘brain break’ challenges; my heartfelt thanks to all those who have been involved.

Prep School News
From the Head of the Preparatory School
Mrs Sue Floro
The theme for my column this week is certainty in the face of uncertainty, as this has become our new normal at Prep.
We are facing unprecedented times and this brings with it significant uncertainty. Our aim, over the past few weeks, and now enacted as we have rolled out our online learning platform and processes, has been to offer certainty for our boys. This certainty is reflected in the boys knowing that they will see their teachers and interact with them every day; in the certainty that if Maths groups are timetabled, then they will happen; and in the certainty that Chapel and Assembly, including the singing of the School Song and the National Anthem, will happen as planned; and certainty that our focus is on all aspects of our boys’ total fitness, which includes maintaining our incredibly strong sense of community.

Kindergarten News
Mrs Mary-Mae Burton, Kindergarten Team Leader
In our final week of Term 1, Kindergarten is continuing to explore our current Knoxigations unit, 'People work together in communities' - a very relevant and real-life connection for the boys given our present world context.
Last week, we asked the boys to make a video and share what they think a community is and these are some of their responses.
Year 1 News
Mrs Emma Donaldson, Year 1 Team Leader
Thank you to all of our boys, parents and the staff who have helped us tackle one of the most challenging terms yet. We would like to share our gratitude and thanks with you all from the Year 1 team.
As teachers, we always talk about the importance of collaboration with all stakeholders. This has never been more true than now. This term the boys, parents and staff have embarked on a journey which has thrown us many challenges but, more importantly, many life lessons and skills. On Friday some of the Year 1 boys reflected on the term and their optimism, positivity and love of life shone through. To say we were proud is an understatement.
Year 2 News
Mrs Alicia Baldry, Year 2 Team Leader
This week the boys will be involved in a number of scavenger hunt activities where they will have to find animals living in their backyard ecosystem to prompt their descriptive writing tasks. We continue to explore a range of ecosystems via Seesaw and we are learning to use research skills to locate information on the Internet.
Year 3 News
Mr Glenn Stephenson, Year 3 Team Leader
As the educational landscape in Year 3 continues to evolve, it has been most pleasing to see students adopt the new routines put in place and the ways of staying connected and engaged with their schooling. Online learning has been a key feature of this change which the boys have recently been accessing to make the most of teaching and learning opportunities from home. Despite some early hiccups along the way, the Year 3 team has been most impressed with the manner in which students have embraced the various changes and adopted a positive attitude towards the current situation. I would also like to very much thank all parents and guardians for your patience, understanding and support during these unprecedented times.
Year 4 News
Mr Jared Rastall, Year 4 Team Leader
Our Online Daily Challenge
This week’s daily challenge is to build or contribute to a connection with others. In class, we have been talking about the importance of kindness and empathy at this difficult time. We would love our families to continue this challenge over the next two weeks by considering safe and respectful ways to maintain or build connections with those around them, such as family, friends, grandparents and members of our community who might be in need. We invite you to check the Year 4 Weekly Brief to see some of our suggestions.
Year 5 News
Mrs Tammy Paterson, Year 5 Team Leader
Our Year 5 boys are continuing their inquiry about the Earth’s Biomes and in particular, our case study on the rainforest this week. We have been looking at the various layers of the tropical rainforest; the emergent, the canopy, the understory and the forest floor layers and how each layer has distinct features as well as distinct animals and plants within each layer. We will then move onto the concept of interconnectedness, before we move into human impact next term. Early next term, the boys will then complete their own inquiry on their selected biome.
Year 6 News
Mr Liam Flanagan, Year 6 Team Leader
What a week! A huge thank you to the boys who are made such a wonderful effort in embracing our online learning and for trying new things. Thank you also to the parents for the wonderful support you have given to the staff and your sons as we embrace online learning.

As the boys are unable to borrow books from our Prep library or local libraries, we will provide boys with opportunities to listen or read books online.
Musical Notes
Ms Rebeccah Morris, Miss Ali Irwin and Mr Ashley George
Online rehearsals via Google Classroom and Zoom
The School is committed to ensuring the continuity of learning as we move into an online learning environment.
A Google Classroom has been created for each individual ensemble group. If your son has not yet joined his Google Classroom Ensemble please email Ms Morris for the Band Google Classroom codes. These will be used for our online learning environment. Please note that all rehearsals will be online for this week, however, there are no lunchtime rehearsals apart from Jazz Band. For boys at home, they have tasks, music and play-along tracks in Google Classroom for them to continue practising. Each conductor will also have a Zoom rehearsal for boys at home to participate in online rehearsals. The Zoom code for each ensemble has been emailed out to individual ensembles by Ms Morris.
Text for the Week
This is real love - not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
