Year 8 Week 2 Term 3 2024

Hero Image

We are delighted to share the highlights and achievements of Week 2 from our Year 8 cohort as we kick off the term with enthusiasm and dedication.

The Visual Arts incursion was a notable success, receiving positive feedback from both students and teachers. The boys' engagement and creativity were on full display as seen in the photo gallery below.

We had some remarkable victories in sports this week. A huge shout-out to the Football 8Fs for their impressive 17-0 win and to the Rugby 14Bs for their astounding 85-0 triumph against Barker. Your hard work and teamwork have truly paid off. We also congratulate Cooper Li who won First Place with Special Honours in the 21st Century Talents Strings Competition. Well done!

Our mentor representatives led an exceptional 'Mentor of Origin' activity during Assembly. The energy and positivity were palpable, making it an immensely enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Thank you to our mentors for your leadership and enthusiasm.

The School has its last Home winter fixture against Waverley this weekend. We would like all students to attend the 1st XV match on Knox 1 at 3.15pm to support our senior students.

We trust that you found the Subject Selection Evening last night informative and that it has assisted your son in deciding the two electives he would like to study in Years 9 and 10. For those who were unable to attend, all of the presentations, including video recordings from Heads of Departments on their subject area, will be available on the portal. To complete the subject selection process, please see the last page of the Year 9 2025 Subject Selection booklet here. Note that as part of the process, students will be required to enter the email address of a parent/carer/guardian, who will then receive an email which will need to be actioned to finalise the selection. The final date for students to submit their elective preferences is 4pm on Friday 9 August 2024.

Sport Newsletter Week 2, Term 3 2024

I hope everyone is enjoying the opportunity to watch some Olympics this week. There have been so many inspirational performances so far from our Australian athletes and I hope this serves as motivation for all youngsters out there to reach for the clouds and dream big. When you hear some of their personal stories, it really shows that absolutely anything can be achieved with the right attitude and support around the athlete.

William Yang (OKG16) was superb in the pool in the 100m freestyle and reached the semi finals whilst coming up in Week 2, we have a Knox representative on the track with Cameron McEntyre (OKG16) throwing the javelin. Good luck, Cam.

For more on sport this week, please read the Sport Newsletter linked above.

I love to ask children about prayer, and to hear them say “God answers prayer.” It’s a simple statement, but a profound truth. As we bring our prayers to God, we know that he is attentive and waiting to hear our prayers. Whether in times of joy, or times of challenge, God listens to our prayers with grace and understanding. He is attentive and ready to respond to our needs. .

In prayer, how wonderful it is to be able to listen and talk to our wonderful and glorious God, knowing his words and actions bring life and sustain us in all that we do. We are sometimes called to be patient, or perhaps we feel our prayers and requests aren’t hitting the mark, but we can be assured that God’s power and love are at work in us, every step of the way.

Text of the Week
I kneel in prayer to the Father. All beings in heaven and on earth receive their life from him. God is wonderful and glorious.

Grammarian Committee for 2024-25

Years 9, 10 and 11, 2025 – your call to make your mark on the School’s Centenary Yearbook is here! Bring your fresh ideas to the Grammarian, the Knox School annual.

We are looking for new members to join the committee for the 2024 edition. This invitation is open to students currently in Years 8-10.

Academy Honour Awards and Colours are awarded for commitment to this co-curricular activity. If the fields of photography, writing, interviewing, design and/or editing interest you, submit a brief written application and answer the following questions:

• The cover of the Centenary Yearbook will be a standout feature. If you had to choose one event or activity from 2024 for the cover, what would it be and why?
• What specific skill(s) can you bring to the Grammarian Committee?
• Summarise your favourite House activity in one word.

Please feel free to attach examples of your work, where applicable.

Year 8 Parents' Supper

Parents' Supper

Around the Grounds

On Monday, Year 8 had the privilege of welcoming 10 experienced artists who worked with students to expand their skills with various mediums whilst they created their own pieces. It was a valuable and enjoyable day for all.

On Wednesday afternoon, Knox and Abbotsleigh students collaborated on a co-educational cooking experience focused on food waste awareness. During the event, students from both schools learned about the impact of food waste on the environment and explored ways to minimise it. The hands-on session culminated in the preparation of a delicious taco salad, allowing the students to apply their new knowledge in a practical and enjoyable way. This experience not only enhanced their culinary skills, but also emphasised the importance of sustainable practices in everyday life. There will be two more cooking opportunities for the students before an end of year celebration at Knox with the OzHarvest Food Truck. This event will be open to all Year 7 and 8 students (with limited tickets) with further information to come in the near future.

The 'Mentor of Origin' activity conducted at this week's Year Meeting was an immensely enjoyable one for all involved.
