YEAR 7 WEEK 6 TERM 3 2024

Year 7 Week 6 Term 3 2024

Hero Image

The Class of 2029 have had a busy week with Geography and Music assessment tasks. Across this week in Mentor, the boys engaged in connections activities with their MacPherson Mates and also had a session reflecting on the Toolbox Learning session from last week on emotional regulation. At the current stage of the boys' development, this is vital information and skills that they can reflect on and utilise in moments of stress.

During lunchtime on Wednesday, we offered basketball for our lunchtime activity. It was great to see the boys engage in friendly competition whilst earning points for their Mentor Group. On Friday during lunchtime, we had the finale with our top two teams competing. It was great to see the boys supporting their peers during what was an intense game.

We are very much looking forward to seeing our Year 7 boys and their families at Knox Gala Day tomorrow. Gala Day is a highlight in the calendar each year with this year’s iteration having been postponed due to poor weather back in Term 2. We are expecting all boys from 10am to 12.30pm for a variety of events and activities with more options for viewing and participation available after that time as well.

In his book 'iDisorder: Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming Its Hold on Us', Dr Larry Rosen, professor of psychology at California State University, discusses changes that occur to the the brain’s ability to process information and the ability to relate to the world due to daily consumption of media and use of technology. This obsession with technology can result in signs and symptoms of psychological disorders (which Dr Rosen has labeled iDisorders) such as stress, sleeplessness, narcissism and a compulsive need to check in with our technology.

I hope everyone is looking forward to Gala Day this Saturday. From a sport perspective, we will be showcasing our Track and Field squad in a number of events, whilst honouring our commitment to the Headmaster’s Gift Race and Deputy Headmaster’s Mile Race. I encourage everyone to come and watch our best athletes in action, as they show their skills in the build-up to their big event in September.

Snow Sports
34 students from Knox Prep and Senior School competed in the Snow Australia Interschools State Championships in Perisher last week. More amazing results were achieved in sometimes quite difficult race conditions, with Knox securing 3rd place Primary Male Overall Championship and 6th place Secondary Male Overall Championship. Knox students brought home one gold, five silver and four bronze medals, with several teams and individuals qualifying for the National Championships in September. We are so proud of the efforts of all students and wish those competing at Nationals the best of luck!

September is the month the ecumenical church has marked as a time to celebrate creation as well as to draw attention to the ecological crisis we face. The theme for the Season of Creation 2024 is “To hope and act with creation”. You can read more about the initiative here

The church recognises that we have not been relating to the Earth as a gift from our Creator, but rather as a resource to be used. Nevertheless, we hold a hope for a better future. Biblical hope is a contextual hope which requires us to actively strive for new life amidst the our collective struggles and concerns. Just as in childbirth, we acknowledge that we can go through intense pain knowing that new life will spring forth. This is our hope as we all do what we can for the sustainability and care of our earth.
