Today I close the door to the past, open the door to the future, take a deep breath, step on through and start a new chapter in my life.
Positive Outlooks

To our departing Y12s – as one door closes on your journey at Knox, you may all be very proud of your strength of character, loyalty to each other and to your school. We have witnessed your abilities to face adversity directly and adapt to these challenges with dignity, integrity, with faith in your teachers, boarding staff and especially with each other, to finish your journey at Knox with distinction and with an enormous sense of pride in yourselves.

As you now look back on the many fond memories that you have made at Knox and in Boarding during your time, I wish to also acknowledge you all for being outstanding role models for our younger boarders over your time in Year 12. You have left a positive legacy to our Boarding community in 2023 and done so with humility and camaraderie.

Below, I commend to you the reflections and heartfelt speech given by our Senior Boarder, Ethan Shepherd, at our farewell Y12 Senior House Dinner held last Wednesday 13 September.

Together with members of staff, we have been so impressed with the boys' ability to pivot, reflect, gain momentum and show courage throughout this term. As all parents and boys know, Term 3 is certainly a busy time of year for Stage 6 Boarders. For Y11 it is their final term and as they near the end of their time in Gillespie Heritage House, we look forward to continuing to support them through the journey of their final year.

From the beginning of term, there were a multitude of final assessment tasks for both year groups, as the course work for each subject wraps up ahead of the exams. I was pleased for the Y12 boys in the Trials who found good rhythm and were great role models for the Y11 cohort, who started their exams straight after the Class of 2023. Results from both year groups have been positive, and the feedback from teachers needs to be used to great effect moving forward.

Term 3 has seen the boys in Stage 5 throw themselves head on into the many challenges they have faced, with total commitment and energy to achieve their best, whether it be in their personal academic programs, weekly Cadets sessions, music practice and performances, or in their very successful winter sports competitions. The boys should also be commended for their fine efforts over the past few weeks managing their time in the evenings and on weekends, preparing for assessment tasks, assignments and completing homework tasks.

It was wonderful to see so many of our Stage 5 boys put their hand up and be selected to take part in the Cadet promotions camp. Upon their return, it was evident to staff that the boys were exhausted due to the early starts and very late finishes of the days, testing their performance under these pressures throughout the camp. This was wonderful leadership training experiences for the boys involved.

There was a happy buzz on return to the Gilmore level of the Knox Boarding Centre at the start of Term 3. This was amplified by the arrival of five new students, Alexander Cornish and Connor O'Brien from the Hunter Valley, River Emerson from the Central Coast (who attended Knox Prep in 2021 and 2022) , and two international students, Philip Duong from Vietnam and Issac Chuang from Hong Kong. All were roomed with our current Y7 and Y8 leaders of the house and welcomed by the cohort.

During this term, we had visitors from the Sydney Jewish Museum give an interesting and informative presentation about the tragic events of the past and how to utilise the power of choice and critical thinking as a positive tool to improve self and society. These traits have been cultivated daily, especially on social outings both on our own and with others, whilst visiting other communities.

As Term 3 slowly draws to a close, we centre ourselves before God; who calls, equips, and sends, and reflect on the term that has been so far. From previous years, Term 3 usually entails a lot of ‘last things’ for the Year 12 boarders and has always proven to be a hectic one with the countless exams, coupled with various house events and outing opportunities.

Rev Rose and I are especially grateful for the dedicated work, outstanding support and care the Boarding staff offered to the boarders; especially towards the senior boys who were undergoing their HSC Trials and preliminary examination.

Another term has gone by and our boys have been busy with study, boarding outings and participation in community events and developing new skills. Following are some highlights below.

Aged Care Visits
Each Wednesday, a group of Year 9 and 10 boarders have been visiting Moran at Warrawee, an Aged Care Facility. Congratulations to Theo Jacobs-Preussmann, Ned Kimpton, Darren Fung and Jock Carolan for their mature and thoughtful approach to the companionship activities they have participated regularly in at Moran Aged Care.

If your son would like to participate, please contact Mrs Clarke so we can put him on the team for Term 4. This is especially important as leading up to Christmas is often a challenging time for people in care.

As Term 3 comes to a close, I want to congratulate our boarders on another successful term.

Our boarders spend countless hours learning and building their knowledge and skills. Feedback is a critical part of learning, so I want to highlight how important it is. Whether it is from informal chats with their class teacher or more formal discussions, it highlights the learning areas that are known and identifies areas that need improvement. In many instances, these observations can be more valuable than marks, as it is essentially identifying and driving positive improvements. I encourage all our boarders to seek feedback where possible and to make use of the critiques that are provided.

With the transition of life after Knox quickly approaching for our Y12s, the Boarder Brothers Program continues to progress as we work on the development of future Boarding leaders.

For Y7 and Y10 boarders, the mentoring program has further strengthened the connections made during the first half of the year. The group planned the term's events and activities for their first session and we acknowledged and supported the RUOK? organisation, the significant father figures in our lives, co-curricular and external clubs that supported our individual interests, as well as created a good luck video for the AIHL team, the Sydney Bears. The aforementioned was in thanks of the generosity from the Sydney Bears supporter group that donated tickets for our BBM group to attend a local ice-hockey match. We continued with exciting events by rallying around our own sporting activities of futsal, AFL, basketball and 'build up' tips around the campus. This has been enjoyable for both mentors and mentees. We facilitated an exchange between our Y8 and Y11 cohorts with a competitive game of dodgeball and from this experience, we will further develop this aspect of the program in the future. We will also add another layer of support by picking up our after school academic student mentoring sessions where we will have Y11 boarders facilitate academic tutoring or workshops with our Stage 4 students throughout the week.

We welcome a new member to the clinic team – Mrs Mary Jane Parente.

The beginning of term saw the continuation of the winter sports program and the Monday morning sports doctor clinic. We kept Dr Jomaa busy with a myriad of injuries, as well as concussions. That clinic has now finished for this year and will restart again with the commencement of the winter sports program in 2024.

Please remind your boys that all medications, including vitamins, need to be brought to the clinic. Epipens and Ventolin can be kept with them and both those must be taken to school and to all off campus activities (excursions, sport etc).

We look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 4. We wish our Y12 boys all the very best for their upcoming exams.
