Head of Boarding

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
Eleanor Roosevelt
Welcome to the first publication of the Boarding News in our Centenary Year for 2024.
It was so nice to see many of our community come together at our ‘Knox Boarding Welcome Function’ on the tennis courts and Chapel lawn at the start of this term. With 202 boarders starting this year, we can celebrate having such a strong boarding community. We also welcomed new boarding staff who include Deputy Head of Boarding and Head of Stage 6 Mr Gulson and family, Assistant Head of Stage 6 Mr Starr and family, Mr Bate, Ms Chiassaro, Stage 5 House Manager Mrs Calayag-Allan Y9 and Stage 4 House Manager Mrs Davis. In addition to these wonderful staff, we are also supported midweek through the help of Mr Ardron, Mr Green, Mrs Frewen and Mr McCrea.
Head of Stage 6 Boarding

It has been an incredibly busy and exciting first term in the Stage 6 boarding houses. The boys have started the year well and many are truly embracing the opportunities presented to them. I congratulate boys and families on the smooth start to the year and am grateful for their generosity in welcoming me and my family into the Knox Boarding community.
Ellen and our children Graeme, Edith, Arthur and Maeve have really enjoyed the transition to Knox and we all feel settled in our new home, with our new extended family.
Head of Stage 5 Boarding

Although it’s the longest, Term 1 has proven to be an excellent start to the year. A highlight has definitely been welcoming so many new boys to Knox boarding as they settle in and are embraced by the ‘old hands’. Stage 5 has the largest contingent of new boys this year with 28 joining. With these healthy numbers the energy and enthusiasm surrounding all activities is palpable bringing with it a strong sense of community and camaraderie. We have also enjoyed sharing exciting beginnings with new families as well and we look forward to events such as Gala Day and Back to Country, to get to know each other further.
Head of Stage 4 Boarding

As we welcome the 19 new Y7 and Y8 boys into our inclusive 30 strong Stage 4 boarding community, we can reflect on it being a wonderful start to the year. Their transition to boarding continues to be a practice that all boarders have experienced, as they adapt into a new environment and experiences that all Knox Boarders can relate to.
Reflecting on the many changes faced in our junior stage of boarding, we, as a group have laid a successful foundation as we head into the remainder of the school year. This has been shaped by the many day to day experiences, connections and developments of our programs.
School Chaplain

At the Boarders’ Chapel Service this term, we reflected on the story of ‘Doubting Thomas’ and the reality that both certainty and doubt, answers and questions make up our lives of faith. True spirituality is characterised by personal authenticity – and authenticity always requires some level of complexity, because we are complicated beings by nature. Human beings are complex, but nevertheless wondrously made in the image of God.
Life is to be held with awe, wonder and gratitude. The Boarders Chapel Service is always a celebratory event and one of our favourite times of the term. The boarding boys and staff are a joy.
Blessings,
Rev Dr Rosalie Clarke MacLarty
Director of Academic Excellence - Boarding

As of Term 2, Knox Boarding will be teaching the boys the Pomodoro Technique as a study skill as we strive to improve the quality of these study sessions to make them more effective and productive. This study skill was trialled with our Y9 and Y10 boarders in Week 10 and will be presented to our Y7 and Y8 boarders at the start of Term 2.
I encourage our boarders to take some time during the school holidays to reflect on the past term. It is crucial for them to recognise their achievements and the areas they need to improve, as this enables them to set goals for positive changes next term.
Director of Culture and Engagement - Boarding

As we reflect on our Boarder Leadership Guiding Statements, we continue to strive to ensure all aspects of our vision and mission are met. The challenges faced by the over fifty new boarders within our community is an exercise the boarding staff and student leaders eagerly worked through in Term 1.
School Clinic
On behalf of the clinic staff, I would like to welcome the new boarding families to Knox and welcome back those who have been here for a while. It's been great catching up with all the boys and hearing their news from home and school.
There is now a purpose built Physio clinic in the Lawson Centre. If your son needs to see the Physio who comes to Knox, please make a booking via the following website: https://hpc-sports-physio-at-knox.au2.cliniko.com/bookings#service
With winter sport season already upon us, please ensure that all they boys have their mouth guards organised before they come back. The clinic does not have a stock of mouth guards and we are not able to fit them.
May I please remind everyone that all medications including vitamins, medications, and asthma preventers must be kept in the clinic.
Following the email from the Boarding Office regarding flu vaccinations, the consent forms are due back by Monday 29 April. (No bookings will be made for boys without consent forms submitted after this date). The Vaccination Clinic will be taking place on Wednesday 1 May and Wednesday 8 May.
We look forward to seeing you at Gala Day.
